I'm need of some simple video editing software where I can cut out parts of the video, IE: waiting at the start line. I looked at windows movie maker but not sure how to edit out frames. There is a trim tool, but that just chops the beginning and end of the video. I did a search on the forum and some of the threads are old now.

Any suggestions?

imovie on a mac is about as easy as it gets, i use it when i want to stitch together multiple segments from a longer video. examples (the charlotte one doesn't include any transitions, it was my first attempt):

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/mp4box is what I use. You have to use it on the command line but it's pretty much one command to chop the video up.

Get your start/end times from the raw video.

mp4box.exe -split-chunk startseconds:endseconds -out output.mp4 input.mp4

Doesn't re-encode the file so it's pretty quick to chop them up, and it only works on mp4s.

I have AVI's from my gopro. Also running the evil win7 on my HP PC. Any other options?

Which Go Pro do you have? Mine spits out MP4s, I think it's the HD hero.

Also it's a windows program, just have to run it from the command window (cmd.exe)

My MP4s are HUGE though. Of course I'm talking about 8 hours of video from the Lemons/Chump race vs. 1 30-60 secong AX run. When I convert them to AVI (so I can use WMM) they are half the original file size.

I have the earlier gopro from about 3 years ago, non HD, that only uses the 4g cards. Default output is AVI and not sure if there's a way to change that.

You must be a Lunix/Unix person. Guys at work live a die by the damn command line. I'm more for point and click for editing, I'd rather have that visual in front of me so I can see what I'm cutting out.

Buy an evil Apple product or command line tool?!? That's really the best you guys can do? I'm sure winows movie maker can do what you want Rodney, but would need to sit in front of my pc to tell you how.

it takes more than running a exe file from a shell to make one a *nix person :)

Real command line people would be angry at the command I posted. -split-time should be --split-time.

+1 more for Windows Movie Maker and I think there's a copy/paste option to link bits and pieces together.

So a little search on the internet showed me that you can use the basic "split" function in windows movie maker and remove the boring parts of the video. Set your split start and stop and then just right click and delete. Saving the file stitches it all back together and saves in a WMV format. Works for what I was looking for....

Rodney,

Sounds like you sorted it out. If not, PM me in about a week and I'll check what I used with my similar GoPro. You can definitely convert from AVI if needed and also edit. I just don't recall what worked best . . . Movie Maker or some other free software.

The built in video editor in the Race Technology software works GREAT. It MIGHT even work without the various licenses that come with the hardware but only at 50 percent resolution. The software can probably be downloaded for free is someone wants to try it.

Racerender. Free. Easy.

Why try anything else?

Double bonus...you can synch side-by-side runs in a Pic-in-pic format. If your datalogger can export .csv format, it will incorporate that data as well.

When you convert them to AVI, you also lose fidelity in the video. The mp4box has a GUI front end that you can install, and it literally is just "start here, end here" and it spits out the video that you specify. No loss in quality whatsoever.
