Saw this on craigslist. Price is a bit high according to KBB but still. 11.5k for a boxter with 24k miles....

I would run (not walk) away from an early low mileage Boxster if it had it's original engine. The 1997-2008 cars that used the M96/M97 engines have a known problem with the IMS bearing. On top of that, the early Boxsters had other engine related issues (casting defects, etc.). A low mileage car may not have had enough miles for the problem to show up and at this point, the car is out of warranty and might be a time-bomb. Oddly enough, a car that may have already had it's engine replaced under warranty and has more mileage might be a better deal.

If I was to buy a low mileage Boxster that had it's original engine, I would factor in the price of having an aftermarket IMS solution (such as the one by LN Engineering/Flat 6 Innovations) installed. In fact, if I was to buy ANY Porsche that used an M96/M97 engine, I probably would invest in an aftermarket IMS solution as even the factory improvements over time haven't completely solved the problem.

Not all cars with this engine have this problem. I have heard reports of cars with 200K miles and no issues. But it is common enough of an issue to be aware of the potential risks.

Like Richard said... I would not mind having a Boxster but this is why I'm not having one.

Last Saturday at the Hurricane PCA school/AX at Laurinburg someone let me drove his Cayman R on the exercise I was in charge.
It was a fast section with nice transition. The 1st pass the car felt weird, hard to explain, felt like if the tires where skipping. Found out that
the stability management was On, turn it Off, did another pass and this time it felt good, would have like to try it on the full course we had.
