With Peugeot gone they currently have zero factory competition. Typically factory backed teams are in their own league when compared to privateers. So unless Audi screwed up a win was just about assured. The lack of decent P1 teams was highlighted by how well the top P2 team did. I think a P2 car was on the overall podium?

There is also the great diesel vs. gas debate within prototype racing. The argument from someone like Audi or Peugeot was that there were no real factory backed gas cars, so there is no advantage of diesel over gas. From their perspective it was all about being well prepared, etc. In fact they feel that the current rules (they have been tweaked over the years to try to break the diesel dominance) are now in favor of the gas engines. But Toyota has entered a new car for 2012 and it uses a gas engine. This is Toyota's first year, so how well they do is up for debate, but it will be interesting to see if they can stop the Audi diesels with a gas car. The new Toyota P1 car was not at Sebring. The rules for 2014 are going to be different as well and Porsche will be back in prototype racing then as well.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I did not catch the race, but I know sebring is a good indicator for lemans.. as far as power goes.
It is interesting to hear about toyota, I know the old red car did not actually win lemans i think.. I know Nissan did.
Perhaps Audi with their diesel and Toyota with their gasser should be a good race.

Audi should have fuel economy on their side, as well as massive torque advantage but toyota will be lighter, and rev higher.

I think that part of the tweaks to try to reign in the diesels is that they have a smaller fuel tank. So if they do happen to get better mileage they will require more pitstops. And as to weight, they are build to a minimum spec. So they will all weigh the same. Also there is the impact of hybrid this year. I don't think it is required, but both Audi and Toyota are doing hybrid cars. I think that while in pitlane they will be using the electric motors only and then starting the gas engine at end of pit lane. Watch this video (car pulls out under electric only, then the gas engine fires up)...
