I'm getting ready to go a cruise and hope and can use my Android to skype from internet hot spots. Is that possible, and how do I do it, remember I'm not a techie like most of you guys on here.

I'd be interested in this as well considering the Germany trip. I guess the bigger question is can I use my current droid x2 in Germany? Need to stop by verizon and ask what my options are.

well you'd first need an account. and it be good to let the people who you would like to call to get an account as well. and tell them to stay logged in.

hopefully the droid is like the iphone where you just press the app and you're up and running. you'll see online contacts and you just click on them to make a voice call, or video call. its all done through WIFI (and cell service if youre in US).

I have skype on my iphone4 and my GF was in italy and they skyped. it rings like a normal phone call. I didnt have to be under wifi since i had service. but she needed to be.

Cline, as Kourosh stated, you need to set up an account first and have those that you want to call have an account as well and be logged in and ready to receive your call. On the cruise ship as I understand it the bandwidth isn't great, so you would want to do audio only. It is possible to call any phone number over Skype as well, its just not free, at least domestically the rate is pretty darn reasonable.

Rodney, I think you can talk to Verizon and get a temporary international upgrade to your phone and have voice and data coverage while in Germany. Beyond that you would need to rely on wifi and Skype, but as I understand it from my friends who have been in Europe recently, wifi is really easy to come by there. Over wifi you could even easily do free video calls over Skype if your phone has a front facing camera which I don't think the droid x2 has.

are you going to nassau, bahamas? if so you'll run into a hot spot as youre getting off the boat and going through the "terminal" area. you'll notice everyone on their laptops and phones. even as you walk along the streets of other destinations you just have to keep refreshing your wifi to find it.

Is this one of those situations where you have to really pay attention to possible HUGE data charges?

I'm guessing that the wifi hotspot takes care of that concern . . . unless you end up on 3G when losing a hotspot.

make sure its on airplane mode and i guess cell data off.

you can still access wifi if youre on airplane mode.

you dont want to get hit with unexpected texts and charges while at sea. the cruise ships usually have their own network, so your phone may pick it up by default.

In Germany Wifi is easy to come by at most all hotels, etc, but you have to have the passcode to use it. Essentially every access point is secured in Germany since it is illegal to have open Wifi there (first offense is a €100 fine), so in 2010 when we traveled between Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, all the way to the Austrian border and then back to Munich, I don't think I ever came across an unprotected Wifi access point.

my phone rep says I will incur huge charges when I turn on the phone before I can put it in airplane mode of if it's not in airplane mode. I am not sure she is an authority but I don't know who is. So other options:

Can I use my old disabled blackberry that has wifi capabilities, ( I just started charging to check this out)

Does Kindle have audio capabilities? If so maybe I will pick up one of those.

I just got off a cruise and got around this by putting the phone in airplane mode before we left the US ports and made sure to keep the phone on and charged so it wouldn't turn off.

Will your phone work if you take out the SIM?
