A buddy of mine is putting this very grassroots-style preseason race together in a couple of weeks if anyone's interested.

Bushwhack Adventures is bringing a new mountain bike challenge event to the Triangle area in 2012! This will be a mountain bike endurance/XXXC event. Treat this as a preseason fitness test and a replicable training ride to measure your fitness and equipment over the 2012 season.

Schedule:

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM; Check-in at parking lot near Lake Crabtree County Park boat ramp.

9:00 AM – Pre-event briefing at check-in location.

9:30 AM - Event Start at the check-in location. The Finish will be back at this same location.

Route:

Course maps: Map 1, Map 2, Map 3

A lap around LCCP and out the back gate by the bench, then a lap around Umstead (Reedy Creek Lake Trail, left on S.Turkey Creek Trail, left on Cedar Ridge Trail, right on Reedy Creek Lake Trail, right on Graylyn Trail, right on N. Turkey Creek Trail, straight on S.Turkey Creek Trail, right on Reedy Creek Lake Trail, to Old Reedy Creek Road), and a final lap around LCCP again. Route turns will be marked with field chalk and arrows in LCCP and with arrows on paper plates in Umstead.

Estimated distance = about 32 miles

Cost:
Pre-registration $20, day-of registration $30. Limited to 100 event participants!

Sweet.

I think I'm doing this loop tomorrow to see how bad it's going to hurt.

32 miles? Holy crap! Most I've ever raced is about 20 and had muscle cramps like nothing I've ever experienced or ever care to again.

Good luck, guys!

My new max is 50.1. Got all that in Umstead this past Sunday (well, five miles of it was out-and-back on the greenway). I still have almost no trail time in Crabtree, though. Need to ride that loop between now and the race...

Me and a good buddy did the race loop today. ~30 miles, 2.5 hours, and 12mph average. Fun stuff for sure and a perfect weather day before the rain comes in tomorrow.

50 miles of Umstead is some serious patience Donnie. Nice!

I hope the weather is warm for the race. Otherwise that water crossing is going to suck.

I was kind of worried about the 'real' winter temperatures coming.

Ya mean like this???

I ride a loop from my house that includes that crossing. It can be interesting at times:)

Is that the one in Umstead? I've only done it once, and when I did it the thing was MUCH lower, if that's it. I generally only ride in Umstead when it's too wet to ride anywhere else, so since doing that crossing once, I stopped doing that trail entirely.

I mean I don't GENERALLY mind water crossings...in fact, I'm the first one in my riding group to try to plow through the big ones at Pisgah. But in the winter? Well, not so much. :)

Trust me, I hate the water unless it's 90.

This day was a no-go for sure and I think it was October when we had those heavy rains for about a week straight. I agree though, cold + wet feet + wind (sometimes) = pure misery.

I'm not sure I'll be entirely recovered by Sunday, but the race is just another training ride for me anyway, not something I was trying to do well in. But today was kind of epic.

Ditto on the training day game plan and I'd say my goal is to just use it as a benchmark to start the season. It will be fun at the end of the summer one day to just crank it out under perfect conditions to see the difference between off season and peak season as far as time/effort go just for fun.

I got a taste of Unwarrie last weekend for the first time and it made me anxious to get back to Warrior Creek. Soon. Pisgah is definitely on the radar for the first time too.
