Oh bummer Scott. But damn if that doesn't look familliar. I have a very similar looking engine in the corner of my garage. Dropped a valve, put a hole in the piston. Not really what you want.

*ring* "Hello Mazda comp... yeah, can I get a crate 1.6L motor sent to me please? $1800+shipping... outstanding."

Good thing you seem to enjoy working on cars.

Scott,

Question: Can you write all this off your taxes as "Automobile Mechanics and Engineering Education"? Beats calling it a hobby to either yourself or your wife. Put a "good investiment for education" spin on it. :D

Obviously you've decided to stay with the Toyota engine. Good choice versus conversion to a V-8 or a rotary due to all the other major issues you would have to deal with.

Or maybe instead of claiming it as a tax expense, claim it as insurance....

"Dear Progressive Agent: I was parked at the auto.....no.....at work...yeah, that's the ticket.......I was parked at work and someone broke into my car and stole all the good parts out of my engine and left me with this toasted heap of destroyed metal. I need to file a claim on my comprehensive policy." :P

The beauty of the internet. I've already been offered a block for free. Just have to arrange to get it shipped here (it's on the east coast so shipping will be $50). I'll now have a few choices, repair vs replace.

Scott, who did the head work? Did you loose a retainer? It seems a bit wierd for it to drop a valve that quick into its life.

The valve broke, rather than dropping entirely. I don't see anything with the valvetrain that I can blame on the machine shop. Everything looks good on initial inspection. The head builder races the same engine, so I'm confident in his abilities.

All I can really think of is debris through the intake, or a faulty part (that happens, maybe it was just a bad valve from the get-go).

The next head will employ some higher quality parts (instead of no-name stainless valves, they will be Ferra stainless valves).

My instructor at Roebling Rd. was Paul Tillery, he signed me off and the car died the next session.

At VIR-S he was my instructor again, signed me off and the car broke the next session...

Maybe it *isn't* Karl.

I can only imagine how sick I would have felt as I pulled the head off (me in your shoes). Maybe you just have to laugh at situations like this. :?

Good luck on the rebuild. :D

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

that totaly blows. But look at the bright side, now you know what not to do. I can say I've had a few do that to me when I was playing "circle Jerk" in an old celica. one was from too big a cam and the valves hit the pistons... OOps.

Here is an idea. To stay in SM it needs to be a Toyota motor. Toyota makes a nice 4.7 L V8. Just a thought. :D

I think a 3SGTE or 4AGZE would do nicely in there...
