Fun time guys, thanks Stacey for hosting. Sorry about hitting you in that race, I couldn't stop or avoid in time when that other guy spun in front of you.

We should do a VIR practice session next time, or maybe a race...

Also, has anyone figured out the in-browser chat? Sometimes the icon shows up, other times it doesn't and I can't seem to figure out why.

agreed...that was well-spent time! Thanks to Scott, Kendt and Zach who helped lead/follow with me. I finally got down into the 1.03s by the end, so improvement is happening!

Jason, I am not sure how you could tolerate framerates that slow! Patience of Job, that. Just go with the three monitor setup and be done. You'll never regret it. A lot of your "issues" are just as you suspect, in-game adjustable settings, feedback strength etc. No worries, you'll be up to speed in no time.

<--needs a new mic so he doesn't have to type while on the front straight

That was great! Thanks Stacy!

I have the turtle beach x11 headset and it works great.

A few notes on frame rate. I find anything less than 50's to make the entire experience weird. One of the best settings to boost frame rate is to turn of shadows. I'm able to run everything max with shadows turned off. Also, on a solo practice session I'll be in the 65's but during a packed race in full traffic it will drop into the low 50's.

I forgot to dig up the iracing settings for my wheel. I have the force feedback at max on the wheel but can't remember the settings in the game.

Another tip I learned was to use the replay. I would run a practice session and save the replay then watch others in the session that were faster than me to see what they were doing.

Happy iRacing!
-Scott

Sorry I wasn't in there longer... the baby's been having problems staying asleep. We're going through a "sleeping on the shoulder" phase for some reason. Plus we were packing for a trip to Durham this afternoon, so I was all over the place.

Agree on the shadows thing... and one of the best things about iRacing that I've noticed, is that they try very hard to optimize their graphics. In most of the updates, I've been able to improve my Frame Rates.

Also... I didn't think it made any difference until I actually tried it... but be sure, if possible, to hardware your computer to your router instead of wi-fi. REALLY cuts down on any blinking you may have and I think it has a small effect on frame-rates in official sessions too.

Oh yeah, turn off the "arms" in-car if you haven't already. That was a concession to the replay/youtube freaks that were boohooing because they didn't have driver animations for their videos.

iRacing, like real racing, is affected by your hardware. The better your machine, the more detail you can run, and the smoother your graphics will be. For example... VIR... when you reduce your graphics settings, you start losing track-side objects... like The Lodge, like the South Course paddock buildings, etc. So you start losing your visual cues that you might be used to in real life... and it makes a difference.

Well, if he'd have "stayed put", we probably would have missed him and we'd all be on our merry way.

iRacers have this nasty tendency to try to "get out of the way" when they spin on track, not realizing that they are only ensuring they'll be hit if someone tries to go around them.

Did you see the guy berating me via text not long before that for hitting him in the hairpin? William -somthing, the guy who was blinking REALLY bad at the start of the race. Anyway, we went into the hairpin, I was following pretty close, not wanting to get beside him cause I was expecting him to disappear anyway... and I misjudged his braking... as well we he didn't turn in cause he was expecting me to dive-bomb him I guess. So I rear-ended him and spun him out.

Couldn't say anything cause I mistakenly chose the Roadster when I entered the session, and my push-to-talk button wasn't configured LOL. I've sent him a PM, but haven't heard back yet.

i dialed every possible graphical option down to the minimum just to get mid 20s fps :) and if there were a couple of cars in frame or i was bouncing around a lot it'd be in the teens.

so not being an online gamer - blinking is a result of what, dropped packets to/from the server? latency and/or jitter exceeding some threshold?

scott does your wheel force "ramp up" as cornering load increases? mine doesn't seem to, or at least i'm not perceiving it. i can change the "weight" in the iracing calibration but that just makes it heavier/lighter all the time, not more or less linear. could that be a setting in the wheel itself (hardware) rather than a software setting? doesn't seem like it would be.

I'd say mine feels pretty good. Here are the settings on the wheel itself.

Sen 900
FF 100
dri 001
abs 100
lin 000
dea 010
spr 0
dpr 0

Jason... if you haven't already, it would probably do some good to spend some time on the iRacing forums in the hardware section, and also the Announcement sections. Especially some of the last iRacing build notices, they've written several things about how to adjust the hardware settings.

will do. i put together a system with a semi-decent video card today, now getting around 70 fps. between that and the steering wheel changes i'm able to click off 1:04s (and the occasional 1:03) at okayama with far fewer offs and spins, still not where i want to be but a definite improvement over the other day!

If anyone is looking for a basic PC to run iRacing (100-130FPS Lime Rock testing):

Back from the dead...

Finally got my iRacing setup working. Three monitors and it seems to run fine at 50fps+. I even got iHUD running on my iPad with it, though I still need to mount that. Still need to do some pedal tweaking, but I got it usable. Just testing with the MX-5 Cup car on VIR and Laguna is daunting, though! I have real laps at both tracks in that car for real, and while things look the same and to some degree feel the same, the problem is no brake feel. I'm finding it really tough not to badly over or under brake. Guessing that comes with time, but wow. It really reminds me of driving my unboosted brakes on the RSX...I just don't like them as I get no feel back through the pedal.

Anyway, I was also kind of underwhelmed at the car options even for purchase. Just not near as many as I would have expected. I got the Ford GT and gave it a whirl...should be fun, anyway.

It's gonna be a bit before I'm ready to race anyone, though!

Okay, getting better. I can almost get around VIR in the MX-5 Cup car without going off. Rollercoaster and hogpen are my nemesis now, which is no surprise since I've just now started MAKING it to those places without having to reset due to crashing.

But I've made a few laps without crashing now, so it's better. Now I feel like the car is wider than it should be...it just seems like it's way too easy to drive onto curbs that I think I've left room for visually. It's almost like the steering wheel is in the MIDDLE of the car, too, based on what I see versus what I feel. Strange.

Still have pedal work to do, but getting closer with that. Plus just getting used to them. Finally starting to get a little bit of fun rather than tedious learning. :D

sounds like you're going through the same exact progression that i experienced. the good news is you'll eventually get the hang of it, for the most part. the bad news is it'll never be the same as real world driving.

i had a couple of friends over yesterday who wanted to try iracing so i booted my system for the first time in at month or two, was happy to see that the caddy cts-v is now one of the free cars. but boy is it hard to drive!
