Question for the S197 GT guys, especially any 2011/2012 5.0's:

Can you go to full throttle in first gear with OEM tires or with DOT R tires either on the street or for an autocross launch?

I'm wondering if for a HARD launch with my 5.0 automatic if a second gear start would be just as good or even better. Especially with the OEM all seasons but even with DOT R tires if for some strange reason that happened (NOT likely).

With or without T/C or ESC.

FYI my FF "easily" spins warm slicks using a 45 mph first gear.

Thanks,

Dick

i think inside line videos, did a video of a sti hatch and a shelby gt. the sti was barley behind in the drag race. and the mustang fared well, but ultimately lost out to the hatch in the end.

ironically, 2008 was not a good year for subaru. however.. if what you want is horsepower and a wild ride.. get a ford.

Is it even possible to make an automatic skip first and launch in 2nd? I've always understood that It's quicker to launch at 70% throttle in first then 100% throttle in second.

You can't hide on the interweb. :)

According to his other posts it has:
Vogtland springs
Koni shocks
Maximum Motorsports Camber plates
UMI adjustable panhard bar
Addco swaybars
18x10 FR500 wheels

Maybe he sold most of it off . . .

I feel kind of dirty, seeing pics of Rodney's car driven in anger before it is his. You know what I mean?

Mine will "lock" into either first, second, or third using the shifter (labeled locations on the shifter) and can launch in any of the three. It can be downshifted manually into any of those three at any speed but won't actually downshift until the "computer" says it is OK.

"Rumor" has it that manual upshifts are slower than automatic full throttle upshifts but in autocross or similar situations the automatic could easily go past the gear needed if the driver lifts/brakes. I'm assuming that the trick would be to launch in first (traction permitting) and then while still at full throttle immediately move the shifter to second for the rest of an autocross course. Then the trans would shift as needed to second, either at full throttle or when lifting/braking. Second is slightly taller with the automatic with 3:15's (stock) than the 5.0 manual with 3:31's. (Just because I have no intention of autocrossing the car doesn't mean I haven't researched stuff . . . just in case. )

FYI the 2013 5.0 automatic will have "select shift" to allow drivers at track events to choose their gear better.

Mine can lock out 6th with a "brake assist button" on the shifter or go directly to 3rd with the shifter but 4th is up to the computer. So far I haven't had enough opportunity to figure out how to get 4th reliably on the highway without getting 3rd. Things get "fast" quickly in 3rd with heavy throttle. Too fast for most commute situations, especially if you have no idea whether an officer of the law is nearby. :(

Just "verifying"

Is this true on a good clean site with hot A6's? (i.e. what can Sam S, etc. do at Pro Solo's?). I have no idea how much grip a big A6 has. I do know that I've never autocrossed a car that could not easily light up the rear tires with the stickiest tires for the class at the time. This includes my 260Z on slicks, my Lotus on Hoosier Autocrossers, my 88 5.0 Mustang on BFG R1's, Miles Beams' C4 Vette on 710's, and my FF (all 115 HP) on hot slicks. Well sometimes the FF requires a lot of revs and real quick clutch release if the tires are really fresh and hot) I wouldn't know what to do with a car that required clutch slip to keep from bogging the engine. :(

Okay that works differently than my last automatic car (it was a '95 dodge), it claimed that it would "lock" into gear as well. What they meant by that was that if you put it in 2nd, it would only play with the first 2 gears. It would still launch in 1st, shift up to 2nd, but wouldn't shift any higher. If you slowed down enough to go back into 1st, it would. That setup actually seemed like it would work well for autocross, but it shifted way too slowly for any real performance driving.

I hear the mustang automatic is quite good. Can you convert it to paddle shifters? That would be kind of cool.

I was thinking the same thing. Also, what's the book value deduct for a car driven in anger? Oh, wait it's a Mustang. Never mind. :)

If it makes you feel any better, the other day I walked into a Ford dealership (for the first time in my life), looking for a paint match for Grabber Orange (another story). I sat in a 2012 GT500 and it felt really, really, reallllly nice.... bad thoughts now going on in my head....

Have you grown a mullet since I last saw you?

Maybe, I'm not sure :).

Holy crap, you guys have been busy!!! And Whitney looking at a GT500, Short even thinking about a blue oval and this thread making 31 pages, you guys make me so proud!

So, Cash, interesting you found Jim on IMBOC, never thought to look, but yes, this is that car and it is best NOT to drive in anger on wet streets. NO problem stepping the rear end out. I will say VA traffic near DC and Reston coupled w/ rain truely makes for a bad day, unless you're driving home your bullitt!

So we got back into town around 7:30 after leaving at 6:30 this morning. This is indeed car number 5386 (There is some karma here. E is the fifth letter in the alphabet and the numbers 36 are in the serial number, so it's a fitting replacement for my e36 328. Have to figure out what the 8 stands for, probably the 8th one of these I've looked at or it's the final connect back to the 328!) I think I got a great deal on this car.

> 42k miles
> konis (of course thay have the clunking sound, so need to inspect)
> vogtland lowering springs
> camber plates
> adco front sway w/ Strano adjustable end links
> wasn't aware of the panhard rod, Jim never mentioned that.
> car is in EXCELLENT condition, everything works
> 27mpg doing on average 72mph driving ~260 miles of i95 and us64/264. I ain't bitching there at all....
> also bought as set of the 18x10 wheels, true and straight, no dings and they look good. Can run 295's and not pinch the tires.
> got the original sway and shocks w/ the car
> a Dr Colorchip paint repair kit for the front stone chips
> all service records and manuals
> original window sticker
> both keys and remotes
> ASSUME freaking sound at WOT. Damn near worth the money just for that.

All of this for the low low price of $17400. I got a deal considering everything that came w/ the car and setup for autox. Other bullitts on the interweb were at $20k and not close to being configured this way.

The only serious problem I have is deciding where to run next year. As it sits, this car is perfect for STX, but this car sucks in STX, but all I have to do is add tires and I'm done. I also like the way the car sits and drives. VERY tough to take this back to stock.

Very good to be home and I hope all you had fun on my virtual adventure!

Ford has a history of being able to start in second gear. I think my Dad's 59 Mercury would do that but it has been "awhile" since I learned to drive in it. Our 97 Mustang automatic will do the same things as the 12 except it is working with only 4 gears and only 225 HP.

No paddle shifter. The press info says the 2013 won't have paddle shifters either. Just the ability to choose the gear.

I see Rodney is back with the car!!!

Had a beer after work with Cash.....his Bullit (and Rodney's based on that last post) get better fuel economy than my 200chp 4 banger.....WTF. I guess that's what 4.76 gearing gets you :).

Can you fit 4 race tires/wheels in the back seat and/or trunk in these suckers?
