ok, so an interested buyer from one of the subaru forums contacted me bout my car. he sounded very very interested. i think hes a younger kid and all into subarus. he's in colorado and i kinda googled him to make sure he was real. he's got 0 posts since May or march of this year. but he is a real person on facebook.

he is ready to buy the car. just so damn excited about it and wants it now.
here are some of the pms/emails from him

Quote:
Sell me your impress it is gorgeous!!! i live in Colorado and have been saving for one literally all year. my dads wife has a wry which i lost my license for 3 years in speeding haha! i convinced her to buy her car because i truly apprecia. te them and i know there are none better! I am also an apprentice mechanic. This is the perfect car for me and I am. the perfect buyer for it! i have 4000 cash i can probably scrounge up the rest but please get back to me i am eextremely prepared to come out and buy it if the engine is strong enough to make it back to denver.
thanks much and best of luck!-Shane

Quote:
I will take everything i really really hope nobody beats me to it lol thats a deal!! I can and will take it in a week if you let me

Quote:
My buddy has a good mechanic in Chapel Hill, Eastgate Service station..?? I would really like a second opinion if it will get me home with that leak. I assume it will, other than the leakage and loss of compression I trust it. I would keep it under 3500rpm. If you can get a second opinion about driving it 1600 miles that would be great, take it where ever you want.. if not I totally understand. But know I want the car so bad its exactly what I'm after! my friend will be coming with me with AAA if its still available next week, he just wants the peice of mind haha, he owes me big time though so he can just deal, and hand me the highly unlikely AAA card in any event lol..I honestly can't believe the first person didnt buy your car I am almost sure I will miss out on this but if you can wait, I will even commit to it at this point. I just want a second opinion

I tell him i dont have a problem taking it to chapel hill for a day to get it looked at for him.

then i tell him about deposit payment.

Quote:
I was thinking maybe a money order with a confirmation number? also my itinerary so u know Im coming, i wouldn't flake.at that point even if i did Its my loss lol. Im a little skeptical about depositing money, how much did u have in mind though?

Quote:
Im all about it my mind is going insane- being given an engine with surprise problems would not be a first for me lol. I plan on immediately rebuilding it. I feel like I'm asking redundantly , but I will get a plane ticket if it is really reliable(ish) like you say. how much do u currently drive it? Let's freakin just do this lol

so now he doesnt really care about getting it looked at by the mechanic

Quote:
Ok. and just so we are on the same page, my dad has been holding onto my savings, I am in the process of getting them from him he lives in another county. otherwise I would be driving home in it already haha. I know how unfair the question is asking you to hold the car for me, but I am so scared that it is gonna sell from right under me, I definitely will buy it the pix have sold it. 12 years later the car still sells itself, from 1600 miles away lol

so then we talked about a plane ticket and dmv temp tags

Quote:
it just occurred to me, I do not have a valid photo id! I lost my license the other day my passport is expired, I have my birth certificate which has no photo and my old id which is punched... I'm not sure I will be able to fly now I have that to look into

Then i told him to send a deposit through paypal and i can hold the car.

Quote:
It occurred to me also just now that i have papal problems. Somebody stole my social security so it automatically locked when i forgot my password, also for the same reason the account linked to my papal isn't current. So much chaos in my life but lets not be discouraged i trust u i hope u trust me as well... I can give u phone info and transfer funds tomorrow electronic or i will overnight u a $$ order.. Anything u want unfortunately papal is out tho

then i tell him i dont wanna do money order and stuff. so he finally gets another paypal account and he paypaled me $250 to hold the car.

he's asking for a bill of sale i can just send him for some reason.

i know this is a long post. what do i have to lose? ive already submitted for the funds to be transferred to my bank.

the 2 red flags i had were he said he couldnt get his plane ticket then his paypal and his SS # issues. but he went through with $250.

i told him to bring cash when he comes into town. maybe im just being paranoid. i plan on being at the bank with him with his cash so its legit and not printed on paper towels. haha.

I'm skeptical. Seems prudent to say that you will hold the car for a stated period of time, or tell him you'll give him first right of refusal if a local buyer surfaces, but he clearly doesn't have the logistics worked out very well. I would kick myself if a local buyer with a valid driver's license wanted the car, but I passed on that buyer for some guy in Colorado who has a high likelihood of not getting his act together. You can refund his Paypal transfer if it doesn't work out.

Good luck.

Edit: +1 on bringing cash and meeting at a bank. The smoother the transaction goes, the better for you.

OMG you are being played from the word go Dude. i wouldn't give this guy my paypal address let alone try to sell him a car.

i sold my Z06 online two years ago. the buyer hesitantly deposited a large sum of money into my bank account. until the money clears you should not even think twice about selling your car to this guy. you have no reasonable reason to believe he has the money let alone a real desire to buy your car.

why do you need a SSN? check on the Colorado DMV requirments for title transfer. nobody flys in from Colorado just to look at a used Scoobie.

tell him you will drop your price by $250 if he wires you the full amount ahead of time. then tell him to get lost once he declines. and also make sure you haven't had your paypal account hacked while you are at it.

He's like 8 yo and his dad is holding his $5.32 from his allowance.

You should expect the reverse of if you were buying a car out of state. You would provide a Bill of Sale, Title, and any other documentation to him in exchange for a cashier's check, cash money, or some kind of guaranteed funds that cannot be taken back as soon as he has the car and the title. If he wants you to hold it, he should send you some amount of money that will keep you from selling it out from under him so he doesn't buy a plane ticket only to find that the car isn't there anymore.

If the buyer sounds flaky he probably is.

When the words "money order" pop up, the guy is full of shit and just mark him as spam.

Fixed for Craigslist. Although once I varied from this and let a guy pay with a Check. I have him a note that said he would receive the car if check # xxx cleared the bank. It was a check from USAA (And the buyer was an older retired vet so I wasn't that worried about being taken to the cleaners) so I was a bit more at ease than a personal check but I still waited till it completely cleared to my account before giving him a bill of sale and title.

Agreed, the buyer sounds flaky, but to me that's no reason to flush the whole thing. I'd continue on with him, within reason, until he does something to make me completely sure he's not for real.

I would NOT accept any sort of Money Order or bank transfer from him- no matter how legit it looks. I would just matter-of-factly ask him for his complete contact info, name, street address, phone number(s), etc and see how he responds.

I'm also curious how he plans to drive the car back to CO without a driver's license... but hey, if he's got the $$$, I'd sell him the car. There is but one cure for dumbassishness.

Jeez, you are way more trusting than me, I read this to get to the punch line. No offense to bret, but i would flush the deal right away. If the the flaky guy ends up coming to buy your car you may be stuck with him.

The very first internet deal I did was some flaky guy in Wilmington that turned out to be some weirdo that just like screwing around with transactions. Sell then pull out of deal, wanted to send my money back, I screwed around and lost my money because I waited to long, then I found out he was buying mini parts from the dealer then returning them I guess to get pics to put on Ebay, Ebay booted him.

Good luck but if you come up missing we will know where to tell the cops to start looking!

thanks for the replies. it really helps.

im not counting on him until he either shows up in RDU with cash. or i get the money ahead of time. ive already been showing it to some locals.

i actually found some of his posts on the forums, he just seems like a young kid whos really really wants a subaru. so no promises with him. cash is cash. sounds like a riceresque kid if you ask me.

im just waiting for me to tell me that his uncle is king of nigeria and will send me $15000 for the car and i can keep 7 of it for my troubles.

OK, call me crazy (wouldn't be the first time)...but I just don't see how this guy could screw Kourosh out of anything at this point, especially since he (K) is on high alert for someone to try to pull a fast one on him.

I agree that the potential "buyer" does sound like a young kid who spends too much time gaming and texting, with a serious case of ADD/ADHD whatever you want to call it, but from those emails posted above from him, I just don't see the classic signs of a scammer.

My personal take on it was as stated above, continue humoring the guy and see if he ever actually comes through- I would NOT turn away any other potential buyers or stop showing the car to anyone interested.

Again, no way in hell would I accept any sort of Money order/check/cheque or anything else from this kid other than cold hard US currency in payment for the car, handed to me personally in a public place, like a bank or DMV office.
