100ft to 1700ft doesn't make much diff. Either way you are going to die if you fall. I have been rock climbing for 20 years and I always feel more comfortable the higher I get up the cliff. I am surprised they don't have some sort of via ferrata set up for them.

SimplyHired says that the average Cellular Tower Climber Salary is $42,000 a year, though discussions at ISP Planet indicate that tower climbing technicians can charge up to $1,500 a day plus insurance fee and some climbers can charge as much $295 per hour. A lot of money for sure, but I wouldn’t do this for $100,000 a day as it is known to be the deadliest job in the US (468 deaths per 100,000 employees).

For $42k a week I'd think about it and I'd probably need a shot of bourbon to calm the nerves. Definitely a job for a single person with no kids!!

For $42K a week I'd do it and take the rest of the year off. Sign me up.

There is a show on National Geographic channel named "World's Toughest Fixes". It's a pretty good show and on one episode they replace an antenna at the top of a 2000ft tower. Link below is not for the full episode, but it does show some highlights...

If you can catch a rerun it's worth the effort.

I'm surprised they aren't going the route the power guys do and do this from a helicopter.

I read a blog post on the tower climber's (Russell Brown) website and he replied to a comment that asked the same question. He said the transition from helicopter to tower would be difficult and that climbing is the only way to do this type of work. And as he says in the video, they also have a simple elevator system that gets them up to what they call the "Candelabra". Then they climb the last bit to the top. I suspect it's not the trip up that is the dangerous/difficult part, but the climbing around once there. Which would have to be done even if dropped off via helicopter.

I can't understand the physics behind how he climbs all that way with his GIANT BALLS dragging behind him.
