We are supposed to be on vacation next week and have run into a snag. We have nobody to keep our two miniature Dachshunds. :(

Before any recommends a kennel, we won't do that. We do not think of our girls as "dogs", more like 4-legged people so we don't just drop them off to be put into a cage for a week.

We are looking for someone to give them loving in-home care. Their home, not ours. Actually we wouldn't mind someone coming into our home to stay with them, but it would need to be someone VERY trustworthy.

Does anyone here have a recommendation? We are in Wilson, but we are willing to travel for the right home.

To give you an idea of how serious we are. If we can't find someone, we won't go to the beach and the $450 we spent will go down the drain before we compromise the care of our girls.

TIA

Ryan already has two dogs and three kids. I'm sure he needs a sitter too!

I understand where you're coming from, but are there no places you can drop your dog off that aren't just "lock them up" type kennels?

We take our dog to dogtopia in cary, where basically, the dogs play all day long (we know, b/c we can watch them on the webcam) and then go in their crate in the evening. Not sure if there are any places like that near you, but I know our beagle LOVES it when we board him.

Not really looking for a 'place', more like a person.

One of our girls does fine in a crate, the other however goes completely crazy...enough to injure herself.

He said Ryan needs a sitter so apparently Ryan can't be left alone either :D

Vincent, we treat our dogs like humans too. What we have done is to let the neighbor kids house sit and when we have had "special needs" for some dogs we have asked the vet tech's at our vet to come in and help. In fact, if you ask the techs at your vet they might pet sit on the side.

The problem is I don't 'know' any of the techs at the Vet, and I'm not letting just anyone into my house.

As for the neighbor's kids idea, you must not know me very well.

You couldn't pay me enough to babysit Ryan.

I've hesitated to say anything on this subject, cause I know i'm too blunt for most folks. But vincent you might want to look at our web site. We not only offer traditional boarding we also have suites that mimic hotel rooms. The dogs are not put in cages but in rooms with beds and interior decor of various types. We have a hunt lodge, tahti room, ACC room, firehouse, safari room and race garage.
"Pet sitting" is the bane of our industry. Unless they stay at your house they are in reality pet checkers. And I can't tell of how many of our customers have horror stories to tell because of the "pet checkers". Dogs escaping is one of the most frequent problems and when this happens you now have a stranger trying to call your dog home. Our kennel has as a barest of minimum two fences between our wards and escape. The other frequent problem with "pet checkers " is when they are not there and the dog or cat gets into one of the many poisons that all of us have in our homes. Without a full time staff these animals usually expire before any problem is detected by the "Checker". Our staff has on numerous occasions found health problems with animals that their owners didn't recognize. If you truely believe that the animals are your family, ask yourself if you'd leave a four year old child by themselves with only a "checker" to look in on them once a day. or would you rather have them here
