Its really good to know that our authorities have gotten their priorities straight, dark car window tint really is a gigantic threat to peaceful society as we know it. Thank goodness they are finally doing something to stop this menace.

You can't even get a cop out to your house after a break in as fast as these stories imply the DMV/DOT gets to your house when they see a fail/pass in one day......

Does the SUV/van exception also include station wagons? I assume so, but if they are getting strict a wagon isn't a minivan... I'm thinking about tinting the rear windows of the WRX, and lesser tint on the front windows but want to stay clear of anything illegal.

When I had my WRX wagon tinted the guys at Formula 1 stated it was not exempt and would only do the legal stuff all the way around. The Magnum however comes from the factory with darker than NC legal tint on all the rear windows, I think they get away with this by classifying it as a crossover SUV, this could be interesting as it is up for inspection soon. Hopefully I won't have some bonehead telling me I have to remove the factory tint from the car, not even sure if that is possible.

I don't think it's possibe since the entire glass is tinted. There is no 'film' which can be removed.

What you guys need is Perfect Glass. It's not cheap but it's really awesome (streak free) stuff that doesn't require too much elbow grease.

I understand where you're coming from, but if cops can't see in your car, at night, during a routine traffic stop they are going to be a little more amped up given the uncertainty, and might do things--uh, *differently*--- as opposed to a situation where they can assess you, your car and potential threats better without tinted windows. jus sayin' :toast:

This is true, but law abiding citizens generally don't get stopped or, if they do, they know to roll down tinted windows and present themselves properly. The scumbags don't care about tint laws anyway, so the point is relatively moot methinks.

Brian is correct IMO. The cop can easily use the loudspeaker to tell you to roll down the windows, if you haven't done so already. Besides, what about the rear passengers of a legally factory tinted SUV? I guess none of those passengers carry weapons? I'm sure he would ask those windows be lowered so what's the difference?

I had an old man ask me once "Why do you have dark windows in that car? Do you have something to hide?" My reply was "Why do you have blinds in your house?" Same principle IMO.

Brian, if your tint is too dark, then you aren't abiding by the law, right? As a law-abiding citizen, I did not know I should roll my windows down. I have, in fact, been told by RPD not to roll down my window until the officer is at my window so that I can verify he/she is, in fact, a police officer and not someone impersonating a cop. Of course, I have legal tint, so maybe that's different...

Everyone has their opinion, but the dude or dudette with the gun and badge will trump what you think every time. And your car vs house analogy fails in the key aspect that cars do not have the same degree of search/seizure protection as homes do. "Probable cause" can be, depending on the scenario, the presence of illegal tint. You're obviously free to ride dirty with illegal tint, but understand that you will likely be treated differently than folks who are legal.

Window Tinting
There is an additional charge to check a vehicle with tinted windows. All windows with
applications of after‐factory window tinting must be checked during the safety inspection. (See
exceptions below)
Windows may not be any darker than 35% visible light transmission. This standard is considered
to be met if the window tint is no lower than 32% visible light transmission when measured by
the station with a photometer.

I guess technically it's 32% based on this.

The DMV guys handling this aren't out to bust *you*, they're really out to bust the inspection stations that are passing cars illegally. If they'll pass window tint, what else will they do?

These are the same "officers" I was talking about in the other thread that inspect car dealers and such. And this is a computerized system. You fail an inspection for ANYTHING and then pass SOMEWHERE ELSE within a short time period, and you get flagged. If those officers have nothing more pressing that day, they go take this low hanging fruit. I really fail to understand how you guys can be mad about that. It's their jobs, and people are being INCREDIBLY STUPID by pulling this kind of stunt. You've already paid for your inspection and now you just need to correct the "failure" and you're passed without additional charge at the same place. Yet you go pay money again to the guy you find who will pass you for an extra $20. Now you and he are both screwed, him worse than you. Smart, real smart.

I was a state inspector. Unless the definitions have changed then station wagons are allowed darker tint like trucks and vans on the windows back of the front two. However a 3 or 5 door hatchback was not considered a wagon. And outside mirrors had nothing to do with with allowing darker tint. The inspection station I worked at did not have a tint measuring device so I was required to refuse to inspect vehicles with aftermarket tint.

And as Donnie said the machines connect to the state database with your inspection report while the machine is still hooked to the car. The state knows if you passed or failed before you do.

I've also used Formula 1 and had good results on the 240. That back glass looks like it would have been a PITA to do. Remember that the glass itself will have some absorbance/light scatter that will be in addition to your 35% tint. If you are on the edge, make sure your windows are clean too. I've usually have my windows down before I drive to an inspection. At least once, they forgot to test the tint.

well, Les. it is by far a serious threat to our community peace officers. think Miami Vice. think you gots to be 24 years old and you pull over a car in the middle of the afternoon under the blazing Florida sunlight and you can't see into the car from the ass to the nose.

think what your widow has to deal with for the rest of your children's lives.

OMG, i am not a republican.............. but as a Democrat i understand that crime is the worst enemy of social reform.

fuck a bunch-o-tint. can't see out the windows at night or in the rain. god forbid if both were to happen at the same time.
