Has anybody done any work running natural gas lines yourself?

Here's why I ask, I found an awesome natural gas grill that I would love to buy (they are not asking hardly anything for it) but I would need to run gas lines from the T under the house to the deck.

I would love to not have to deal with LP cans anymore. Just turn a valve and light the fires!

Here's what I found. Unused. For less than 1/5th that price!

So, any words of wisdom for the DIY'er? Or punt and have someone do it for me?

Make sure you check all your joints after you have connected them either with soap or an open flame (if you are confident) LOL

I've been talking to my Father in law about it, he's a HVAC/Plumbing contractor, he's run alot of natural gas lines, and he feels confident that I could pull this off. Sounds like I'll be buying a new grill in the morning!

This is what my father-in-law and I set up a few years ago. We T'd off from an existing line and ran it under the deck. We put a valve in right at the end by the grill I shut off for extra measure while I'm finished grilling. Natrual gas runs at very low pressure, so it's not as bad as you think. After you install the new line you can pressurize it between two valves and let it sit overnight. If the pressure stays the same you should be good. We charged ours to 90 PSI which is way overkill and it didn't budge. Not having to deal with tanks is wonderful and probably cheaper as well.

I didn't do the work myself, but have zero regrets from changing to a Weber Genesis that runs on natural gas. No more running out of LP!

Once you have a natural gas grill you'll never want to go back to propane. The house I grew up in and the house i currently live in have one. You can't beat the convenience of it. It's double nice here since the stove is electric knowing I will always have a way to cook food.

or maybe he sees this as an opportunity for his daughter to upgrade. i'm pretty sure that's why my father-in-law supports my racing.

i can sympathize with you on this one Jason.

i actually dumped the connection that was here when we bought this house against the advice of my HVAC man who stubbed the line for me.

given the eclectic nature of the previous owner's various installations i'm sure i made the right decision.

Lol! I hope this isn't the case! I know he doesn't have a problem with the racing (he's a recovering drag racer from back in the day) and I don't think I've done anything over the past couple of decades for hime to want to off me! :looks over shoulder:

Well...someone saved me alot of hassle, heartburn and time under my house today.

I went back to the store to talk them down a little more on that grill only to find that it was sold.

I'm guessing it will be there again before the end of the week when the buyer figures out that he can't hook a propane tank up to the natural gas line. If that happens, I'll probably buy the damn thing.
