this is how MM and i spent Sunday.

a little pricey but overall a good experience if for nothing other than a different perspective on safety behind the wheel. they provide the vehicle so as to take the kids out of their comfort zone.

Mary-Margaret's instructor had a rather enviable resume`.

That's awesome, how much did it cost. Whatever it was it is a great investment.

I think that is a bargain. You should be able to get a discount on your auto insurance due to that but our Insurance Commissioner would consider that discrimination. I may see if I can get some co-op money from my companies to sponsor a couple of kids.

Sounds like you're being proactive Steve. Good for you and MM.

Did they cover how to drive safely while texting? I swear that nonsense makes drinking and driving look like a good idea.

cool idea, but i think their biggest need right now is vehicles. those cars were donated for use by O'Gara (the security firm that operates out of VIR)

GM or Ford could earn a bunch of PR Points by falling in with some vehicles.

texting was discussed. they even let two boys drive with "Beer Goggles" on course.

Steve,

I know I've blabbered about this before, but when my kids were young I sent them to the Performance Center teen driving schools. They did need a learner's permit at 15 to go. I had them do the 1 day teen course at 15 and then back for the 2 day course at 17. That intro at 15 years old was probably be best investment I could make for them. They came back well versed in ABS braking, lane changes, skidpad car control, etc. This was 9 years ago for my son now, and 7 years ago for Jackie. Later on when they both did their first BMWCCA HPDE at VIR, they were ready for the skidpad lessons to practice understeer and oversteer again. It's pretty amazing how ingraining something at the VERY start of driving can carry through powerfully into the future.

They did cover cell phone distractions (this was before texting, they likely have them do that now) on their waterwall course. The kids have to drive the course and either slalom around waterwalls or stop before a track-wide water wall. They had them do that for a while and get proficient at it, and then they had to tell the instructor a story, that he chose the topic of, as they attempted to do it again. I would say that every single one of them learned how massively they overestimated their ability to talk and drive at the same time. Of course Jackie was hearing the radio chatter ahead of her run, cataloging the different topics asked, planning her story for each topic, and then went on to almost complete the course while telling him the story, lol.

Anyway, just a thought if you want to help round out your daughter's driving education. They do a great job down there, and the instructors are fantastic.

Well, if MM can end up being as fast as Sean, we'll dump you for her! You can still come along as her manager and personal assistant.

I wonder if Steve has taught her how to flat-spot a tire yet? :deadhorse:

she definitely thinks more throttle cures understeer.

Gee, I wonder if the State of NC has some old Police cars that they could donate to a good cause? Like they donate their Taxpayer funded facilities to organizations teaching kids driving skills other than parallel parking
