Short article in Autoweek about a potential new trend...

http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv? ... e=02910534

In short that article says that in Canada, State Farm insurance is canceling some policies if the owner has modified their car (lowered springs, etc.). Even those with totally clean driving records. They seem to be mostly targeting the import tuner market. This seems to not be a problem in the US yet, but people are watching with interest.

Obviously this could go just beyond the tuner crowd, but also impact those who have street legal cars that they modify for autocross, track, etc.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Geico got wind of me doing One Lap last year. I got a nice letter in the mail last friday describing that my collision and comprehensive is cancelled as of right now because I was racing my car on race tracks blah blah blah. I'm with coastal federal insurance now :)

On a related note...If you are part of the Mazdaspeed team support program, every invoice comes with a sticker telling you that the parts are intended for off-road use only, and reminding you that competition voids the factory warranty on your vehicle. This is despite the fact that most cars that autocross (and time trial) are street legal, and even if the parts from Mazdaspeed are OEM stock replacements. Just a thought if you have a Mazda still under warranty - if you submit the two competition results to sign up for the Team Support Program, they have the data to void your warrantly.

Part of it has to do with the way that the Canadian Insurance companies are set up. You might find some more info here

All of this is much worse if you are still making payments on the car, and thus *have* to have collision coverage. :(

When was the last time you heard of an insurance company going out of business? They seem to be making pretty good money. :(

On a different note, I've long thought that the SCCA should negotiate or create an insurance body for people who SOLO1/2.
