So, b-day number 55 is right around the corner and the wife and I are looking for something a little off of the beaten path for a 2-3 day vacation. I’d like to keep travel time down to 6 or so hours, so that puts VA, WV, SC, GA and the NC mountains and coast w/ in reach. Any suggestions? Looking for something fun and off beat.

We did this for my wife's 50th:

http://www.aceraft.com/

White water rafting one day, horse back riding the next. the also have mountain biking. We stayed a "cabin" that was really a trailer made to look like a cabin.

I stayed at this guys house about 15 years ago

Yeah, I was thinking either white water rafting or hot air balloon ride. Either would be very cool...

What does your wife think? She's thinking relax at the beach or in the mountains, you're thinking hang gliding, surfing, hot air balloon, rafting stuff :D

The next GNCC race is on June 25th-26th at Snowshoe. I have wanted to go the this race ever since they started having it there. Snowshoe has some nice digs and you could spend a day on the New river.

So I'm biased because I'm a Virginian and graduated from UVa, but this place is a great resort/spa. Historical tours nearby UVa/Monticello, vineyards/wine tastings, hiking, golf, great restaurants---and, apparently, sunrise balloon rides. Just a thought.

Hot air balloons are cool, but an hour of it is probably more than enough for anyone.

I'd go with a half day of the rafting thing at most unless you have done it and REALLY know you love it. It'll be fun, just maybe not all-day fun. Nantahala Gorge is a good destination to get off the beaten path some...the Nantahala Outdoor Center can hook you up with all sorts of fun activities for a few days including rafting, horseback riding, biking, hiking, and other stuff. I haven't done it, but I like Steven's idea, too. If she's into the beach thing, then head east on 64 to Nags Head, turn south on 12 and drive all the way to Hatteras Village. Stopping there is fine, or head on across the ferry to Ocracoke. The Village is more a fishing destination with quiet beaches, while Ocracoke is a little more of a Keys feel. Even if you stay in the Village, taking the ferry to Ocracoke one day is worthwhile, and a stop at Howard's Pub for a meal and beverage is not to be missed.

Savannah or Charleston are still somewhat quiet if not truly off the beaten path. I dunno, so many options...

Snowshoe in the summer is absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen so many wildflowers.

The ferry from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke takes about two and a half hours - plenty of time for a fancy picnic on the way and it's just fantastic.

They also do mountain biking on the ski slopes up there in the summer

More things to do in the Snowshoe area...

Cass railroad is fun. Take a picnic basket.

And don't forget the best part: making a run for groceries down the mountain on your summer tires :)
