Here's a new one to me...someone turned in their title on a car back to NC claiming it as now just a "parts car" and then turned it into a track toy. Any chance of getting that title *back* to make the car streetable again?

Crazy guess, but would a salvage title work?

what is the benefit of "turning in" a title? i've never heard of such a thing. tags yes, but not title. at first i thought property tax but that's based on the registration.

There's some new thing where they can get picky about it somehow thanks to the inspection laws and registration, I think. *shrug* All I know was it was turned in.

I've heard of salvage titles being turned into rebuilt titles, maybe you could try claiming it as rebuilt.

We're going through this now with my father in law and a Ford Pickup.

A few months ago, he decided to "turn in" the title to the truck, since it has a dead transmission and it's been sitting at his place for a couple of years. Then he decided that he wanted me to try to sell it for him. I posted it for sale, but everyone asked about the title- so we did some research. The DMV told me that we could get a title re-issued into my father in law's name, but the truck needs to be inspected by a DMV inspector, who will fill out a form and then submit the paperwork. Not sure of total cost, but they did not say anything about any exorbitant fees required to do this.

They said we could schedule an appointment for the DMV inspector to come to my place to inspect the truck, or we could TOW it to a DMV License/Theft office during certain hours and they could do it there.

So, I would say if the previous owner is willing to do some work, you should be able to get a title in his name, then transfer it to your name once you buy it.

Keep in mind we have not actually gone through the process yet, but this is what we were told over the phone. My wife made the call and I think she told them that my father-in-law was "confused" and didn't mean for them to "junk" the title.......

Bret, that definitely sounds like the scenario here and the likely outcome.

Be prepared for the fact that the "DMV inspector" is actually a full on police officer with the state and will show up armed, with cuffs, etc, probably driving an unmarked state car with tinted windows. The inspector for *this* area (and I'm not sure how big his area is or what else it covers, but the CH area in general, and quite a bit more) is Inspector Hooks. Also be prepared for the fact that you will likely have to call your particular inspector during a two hour morning window on just a couple days of the week...there is no way to get them otherwise. These are the same officers who actually arrest people for doing shady things on car dealer licenses (rolling back mileage, altering titles, etc), but in general are good folks. This was the same inspector I had to use to get both my big trucks re-titled as RV's instead of commercial trucks, and he also had to inspect my Pinzgauer before they would accept the Georgia title.

Anyway, it may not end up mattering in my case, but we'll see. Going to look at the car next week, I believe. If the cage is up to snuff I won't care about the title, if it's not then I may still want to buy the car and make it streetable again. Good to know that I need the person who turned in the title to get it back...almost positive the current owner is the one who did that, so I should be good. Of course, they may not let him get a title back since it's currently missing some road-going parts. Hmm.
