it would seem my house in peaceful & quiet Harnett county is smack ass in the middle of a military flight zone. not such a big deal when the occassional helo or two fly over the house; but there is some jack-ass in a transport / cargo turbo-prop that seems to enjoy buzzing the neighborhood.

today i stop at the top of my driveway to check the mail and this hotshot comes screaming down into the cul-de-sac at maybe 150 - 200 ft. straight over the house and the horses etc.

short of bottle rockets or roman candles what are my rights / options here?

I could be quite wrong, but I would guess nothing. One of those suck it up or move I bet.

Hope I'm wrong though. How long has this been happening?

we have been here 3.5 years. typically one plane flies low about three or four times a year. usually banking right over the house, it has happened twice this week. today was just about unbelievable to me.

i've always thought maybe the guy lives in the neighborhood, but i doubt it anymore.

Isn't this like moving next door to a drag strip and then complaining about the sound of cars on a Friday night?

FWIW, I spent 17yrs living near Fort Bragg. Those guys need to train, and they're going to do their training near the base. I remember on more than one occasion that there would be night time heavy-artillery practice for a week at a time. They also would do night time training with helicopters. They would fly over so close to the house that you could see the guys sitting in the copters even though it was dark out. That's just part of living close to a military base, IMO.

I think the funniest thing you could do is climb on your roof and moon the guy.

close? yes and no actually. 35-40 miles away so Bragg is within commuting distance but i only live 8-10 miles south of Fuquay.

Yep, you're screwed. I mean, who are you going to call? The Pentagon? Let me know how that goes for you!

I remember back when I was in my 20's and me and my buddies would rent a condo for a week in Emerald Isle. Every morning for the entire week a Harrier jet would fly over several times about 7:00am. :x back then I would sleep until noon so this really pissed me off since I was on vacation. As it turned out not far from there is another training facility with a billboard-sized sign next to the "US Goverment Property Keep Out" sign on the barbed-wire fence that read...

"Pardon our noise, it's the sound of freedom"

I've come to realize that no matter where I move there will be something/someone that is a problem. At my current location we had a nut job two doors down that tried to blow himself up. Also Brewer's dragstrip is about 2 miles away, but that is a good-type noise and only lasts until midnight. Also it turns out our house is on the direct flight path of the Life Flight helicopter that goes from Greenville to Rocky Mount. They fly kind of low and it drives my dogs crazy. Of course my next door neighbor like to shoot his guns in the backyard, which is even worse.

My neighbors don't complain when I either unload the Lemons car home at midnight, or take it for a few laps up and down the cul-de-sac for "testing", so I call that give and take.

That's MCALF Bogue Field and the NIMBY's have ALMOST shut it down, its right on some primo beach front property. Its actually quite an interesting site, they have a simulated carrier deck there.

The Pardon our Noise thing is at the front gate to every Marine Corps air station I have been too.

As for Steve's problem, good luck with that id suggest

Steve,

Call the base and nicely ask for the base commander's office. Tell them that one or more of their pilots seems to be violating reasonable minimum altitude levels over civilian areas and you would like to know the "rules". Let them know that you understand the need to train but you suspect that their own rules are being violated.

My parents lived next to a Navy "touch and go" training strip for many years and sometimes the carrier pilots would do their "try again" turns much too low and right over houses instead of higher and over nearby Puget Sound. There is a big difference between what their rules allowed and what the hotshot pilots liked to do. A "supportive" call to the base normally calmed the situation down . . . for awhile.

Dick

thanks Dick. i probably won't do anything for now unless it gets to be a bit more frequent. i'm reasonably sure they are flying well below where they should be. one of my subs told me his Aunt while living in Lillington got a new car from the DOD once. seems a pine tree mysteriously fell on her car in the middle of the night.

as it turns out i was in Havelock today. i suppose i could be worse off, they were quite busy today. easily 15 flyovers / touch-n-goes in the 20 minutes i was in the building across the street. holy screaming jet fuel fun Batman . Seymour Johnson was also quite active as i passed thru.

Steve,

I think SJAFB is having their "Wings Over Wayne" airshow this weekend, that's probably why there's so much extra activity.

BMW Farm seems to be almost directly underneath a normal flight path for all sorts of military aircraft. I almost shat myself once when several of those "transport/cargo turbo-props" flew over the shop so low they blocked out the sun and temporarily deafened me. Once I regained my composure I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen.

Bret,

You are basically due south of me which would put you right under the same training route that I am. I have seen many, many awesome military aircraft fly over my backyard. Almost all at tree top level. The coolest were the V-22 Osprey that did a week's worth of training during the time that the project was cancelled and the B-52 at tree top that flew over last year. That one took me by surprise!

The ones I didn't care for were the Harriers, going balls to the wall over the house while my then infants were trying to nap. Yea, those made for some rough nap times!
