in 1979 / 1980 i read almost to the bottom of the first page of The Hobbit. my room-mate at the time was a fan. he did talk me into reading Watership Down which i did but i must say i think the symbolism was lost on me.

i'm fairly sure i read thru Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas also with similar results............

honestly Charlie i was trying to make
Left
On
The side of the
Road

work, but it is a stretch i will admit.

Twisted indeed, while the Magnum I traded the Saturn in on strokes my soul with dramatically more vigor, seeing $3.40/gallon for regular gasoline this evening does make me take pause and miss the Saturn ever so slightly, at least I have the Miata which is quite fun to drive yet also "reasonable" on the gasoline consumption.

FWIW, I'm right there with you Cline. Thankfully I had no idea what "LOTR" meant as well.

I did read, and enjoy, The Hobbit when I was 12. I hit puberty when I was 13. Girls were a lot more interesting.

While Tolkien wrote in the 50's (a contempary of C S Lewis who I do read - just to show off my literary muscle a little bit) I would say 99% of fans are only familiar with the Movie.
