I just bought a tow vehicle :D and am now preparing to order a trailer. The tow vehicle is pre-wired at the dash for electric trailer brakes. It has a plug and an uninstalled mate to the plug with the wiring to attach to a brake controller. The plug in the back is a standard 7-pin connector and the trailer will have brakes on one axle. Total weight of trailer and car will be around 3000 lbs.

:?: What type of brake controller should I be looking at? Is there a brand that people have used that they like? Any "gotcha's" that I need to be aware of? I am completely new to trailering, so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Tekonsha Prodigy.

I have a lesser Tekonsha controller that I'll sell ya for cheap (mine is the Voyager model). I'm about to upgrade to the Prodigy (the Prodigy is self leveling, and basically idiot proof, the Voyager actually takes user intervention for setup).

Thanks - "idiot proof" is the ticket for me right now! Just to prove it, what does "self - leveling" mean? Is that setting the level of the braking power or adjusting for the grade? Or both? Or neither? :?

Self leveling is adjustment for "level", I'm not sure how it cmpensates for grade, but on the models without it, you are supposed to adjust the controller on level ground. It probably adjusts for both the grade and the pitch of the vehicle.
