Not exactly electronics but I'd like some kind of comparison/analysis software at the same level of Traqview that doesn't require proprietary logs to function.

Since the car is fully Megasquirt adding a 2-axis accelerometer costs me $25 and time. GPS is a bit harder but for something in the $100-$150 range, along with a bunch of time, I could build a device that queries Megasquirt for tps/accel data/rpm/etc (CAN) and logs it to a SD card along with the GPS speed/position data in whatever format. The problem is that there isn't anything around to analyze the data as easily/completely as traqmate and traqmate put some effort into making sure you couldn't just use their software.

Have you tried Racekeep or Ciruit Tools?

I can send you a copy of CT with data formats and you can try it out. Getting your data in the VBO format is very easy.

For reference a typical 'short track package' (2 watt radios) consists of:

Car harness
PTT button
(2) Motorola radios w/ chargers
(1) crew chief headset
(1 pair) foam ear buds
(1) helmet mic

That system will typically cost $500-600 MINIMUM even using refurbished radios. Add in the fact that we need headsets (mic and ear buds) for four drivers ($150 each) and we're talking almost $1000!

OK, I have a estimate from a manufacturer that would include all items listed above for roughly $460 for a good name brand 2w system. Each additional helmet headset would be $58. Additional Crew chief headsets would be $89.

Can you described this "headset" and it's connections please? To me a headset includes the mic as well as the ear buds/speakers. Is the headset-to-car-connection NASCAR/IMSA-style or DIN? If it's DIN throw it in a trash can.

We have three options quoted to us.

The first system uses the standard NASCAR 1/4" Phono, the other two have the 1/8"/2.5MM combo plus. No DIN connectors. The Helmet headsets include Mics.

From my research (and I've spent waaaayy too much time on this) the NASCAR 1/4" phono is the way to go.

Does the $58 helmet kit use foam ear buds or speakers like a Chatterbox? The cheapest foam ear buds (look just like ear plugs with wires) I have seen were $65 and that didn't include the mic.

The $58 look like Ipod Headsets with a mic.

The nicer Ear shaped ones are pricer. I do not have a quote for that.

You are talking about these, which are very uncomfortable a with a helmet after 2 hours in the car:

I’m talking about these, which work better during a long stint like we run in endurance racing:

These are really expensive ones that can be custom molded for your ear like the pros use:
