My wife and I are thinking about having some work done to the back of our house and basement, and wondered if anyone has had good experience with a residential architect or design/build firm?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

thanks!

Steven,

If you are still looking PM me with contact information, etc. My brother-in-law (local commerical architect) has a coworker who might be a good match with your needs.

Dick

All I'm gonna say on this subject is this...find as many as you can, screen over the phone, and then sit down, in person, with at least TEN of these before you select one. This is, without a doubt, the most important person in this kind of process. Do not sign up with one just because they have skills, either. Find the ones with skills via the web or whatever and then spend some time finding out if they are right for YOU. When you find one you think "man, this person is so cool that I'd probably be really good friends with them", then you MAY have found someone good.

Then as you get started, if you get any kind of bad vibes of the person trying to steer you rather than making alternative suggestions and then LISTENING to your direction, end the relationship and find someone else. I've been down this road too many times and stuck with people FAR too long and paid the price ultimately.

Thanks for the help and advice--the more, the better, especially when it comes to dealing with contractors, subcontractors, architects/designers etc. It's not a huge job, but better overprepared than over my head, if you know what I mean...

We're still probably 12-18 months out, as I'm someone who wants to get prepared well in advance....as you said, it's to my advantage to get a list of architects, interview/review/check references on my own schedule and find what works well ahead of when I would want to begin the work. I doubt there will be a sudden deluge of demand in the short term, so I think time is on my side.

Dick,
if you wouldn't mind sending me your guy's info I'd appreciate it.
