we have all seen the Lexus TV ads that crop up this time of year; "A December to Remember" but in this period when most experts are preaching fiscal responsibility and austerity, is their new tagline offensive to anyone else but me?

i'm paraphrasing... "let's face it, has anyone really ever wished for a smaller present?"

say what you will about BMW, but at least their TV commercials are somewhat humble in their marketing approach.

who is Lexus marketing to specifically? it sounds like a classic F**k Y** to the average working American. i guess that is what makes the brand so desirable.

classic Republican ploy............... you bastards! 8)

Exactly, what is more humble than claiming you are the "ultimate driving machine"?

uniquely BMW? Joy is BMW? fine, they call themselves the Ultimate Driving Machine. hardly my point. i doubt i could convince either of you the validity of that slogan. i drank the Kool-Aid a while back, so be it.

but for Lexus to come out and profess that they are the car for those who didn't suffer catastrophic losses due to the recent "economic downturn" is frankly offensive to me and IMO an affront to most people that are not among the rarified air of the Wall Street / Banking Industry fatcats that have apparently again become flush just in time for X-Mas 2010.

so either Lexus is thumbing their nose at most of us, or.......... they are trying to convince people that can't actually afford a Lexus to go broke to own such a fine example of automobile engineering.

Cline might call that a targeted audience. but then again he is a Republican.

and yes Aaron, i do expect your vote in the upcoming election.

And spending is up, savings are coming back down, credit card debt is going up again. Everyone has frugality burnout so now they are again spending more than they have so why not market to it?

Maybe we need a government agency to oversee it?

Wait an "luxury" brand being pretentious? Image

Has anyone actually bought a non-teenager a car for Christmas? To me it seems not that far off from buying a blender or washing machine for someone.

It had a better ring to it than..."BMW. Better engineering by moving the dipstick to inside the car".

No...IMHO, the dipstick has ALWAYS been inside the car, usually in the drivers seat :nana:

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are.

Since my name was brought up I will weigh in on the subject.

Advertising is the opiate of the masses. If you are swayed in your purchasing decisions by what advertising tells you you are a moron. Advertising just ads to the cost of the product. I would love to know what the percentage of this is on average. If course I sell for companies that don't waste much money advertising so I'm a little prejudiced.

Steve,

I think they're marketing to Federal government workers.

Since 2005 the number of Fed workers, many unionized, making more than $150,000/yr is up over 1000% (not a typo, +1000%) -- from about 7000 people to over 82,000 people. Since Obama has been in office, the number of Fed gov't workers making more than $180,000/yr has more than doubled.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-11-10-1Afedpay10_ST_N.htm

As someone said a long time ago when the "stimulus bill" was discussed here, the mantra is "get in line at the trough", get in the position to suck from the gov't teat. Now all those that did are buying Lexuses, Lexi, whatever the heck they are.

Thanks Chuck, that's called spelling it out for beer soaked dumbocrats. Here's another interesting morsel, France now has 48% of its working population working in public service.....Seems like we might take a lesson from that.....But why confuse Steve with facts. He never let them stand in his way before. I'll drink to that :D

How does the pay of the highly paid government folks compare to the similar private industry jobs?

How does the pay for the vast majority of the government workers compare to private industry?

How does the pay level for all those private contractors hired for Iraq, etc. under Bush compare to what "government" solders make? We pay for them!

The VA has had to staff up to deal with all the Iraq war damaged soldiers.

The FDA hopefully is staffed up to catch up.

How many of those new government employees are there to try to oversee the huge number of government contractors whose executive certainly get paid a lot more than even POTUS.

How come government grows the fastest under anti big government Republicans?

How come the debt got so out of control under Bush?

How many of the people who own all that high priced housing around DC actually work for the government versus working for private companies who get their money from the government (i.e. contractors)?

Note that the biggest portion of the increase was under Republicans.

Actually the vast majority, essentially all, of this increase reported by the USA Today article (and using data from the US Office of Personnel Management) happened after the Democrats took over the Congress in 2006 and continued strongly since Obama took office.

Why make this political? Both parties are a total disaster. The system is long broken with masses in both "parties" milking the Fed gov't for all they can get.

Private sector salary growth has been anemic to down over the same time period.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, since 2000 federal pay and benefits have increased 3% above the rate of inflation compared with 0.8% for private sector workers. Compound than 2.8% per year difference over 10 years...

A few things have outgrown everything by a huge margin since the economic peak in 2007: federal worker salaries, health care premiums, college tuition to name a few.
