Mike, if you are going to do the fuel filter, you should put a Walbro 255 fuel pump while you are at it since you have to pull the back seat and pull the whole 'wand' out of the fuel tank. The oem pump is probably on it's way out and it'll keep your injector duty cycle down once you get tuned.

Filter's in the engine bay in an 02

Ah, the 04+ WRX is in the fuel tank. I assumed (incorrectly) the 02 was the same......<Napoleon> LUCKY! :)

Something I forgot about, but just remembered... I had to replace the radiator on my WRX. It seems to be a common thing at around 100-150k miles. Started leaking at the bottom, around 130k miles. Got a replacement from 1-800-radiator.

Not a bad idea, considering the, um, coolant history in this car...

my 05 has been pretty tough... it has different ratios then 02. but the 02 probably picks up quicker at autocross speeds. at lower speeds, my car can bog. traction all wheel drive is great.. good tires and awd can get you many places.we used our car to get around in snow alot last year.welcome to the club mike.. its fun so far.

Update:

This car is a total hoot to drive. WOT in 1st gear makes my neck hurt. Measured a 5.7 s 0-60 run being easy on the clutch. Driving it like I'm trying to break it. AGX's are on and working nicely.

Been talking to a lot of paint shops ... this is going to be expensive.

STi uppipe and Perrin catted downpipe (ST legal from what I gather) on the way. Been working on fixing the cruise control. Narrowed down to a bad steering wheel slider contact.

Brakes are a lot better, considering I bet the fluid in the car was 8 years old. Also all my 1st-gear-worn-synchro problems magically disappeared with fresh super-S or whatever it's called trans fluid.

It's a fun, straight car and I'm really happy with how it's working out. I don't miss my BMWs at all :)

Shit, I forgot we were supposed to meet Wednesday with those springs. Hopefully you didn't go over there because I didn't make it. :( I'll almost definitely be there this coming Wednesday, though.

Welcome to my world, Mike.

Something else I remembered once it got really cold - some of the early WRXes have a really bad fuel smell when started on cold mornings. This is due to a fuel hose under the intake manifold, and is a recall/tsb that will be taken care of by the dealership. Mine will be scheduled for asap when I visit the dealership today.

Anyone have a Tactrix cable I could borrow this weekend? I'd like to try out a stage 1 tune for kicks...

Sure, have you picked a map from somewhere? I'm about to start searching for the best reliable st1 map...

Clark Tuner (I think is the name) on NASIOC is supposed to be very good at opensource tuning. Go to the electronics/ecu subforum. I'm sure you can find his name easily.

Mike you have PM.

For a "stage 2" 2l WRX tune, I've been quite successfully using this one from a guy names testes1010:

http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewtopi ... =28&t=4075

Once I'm able to log without having to deal with a laptop in the car (just haven't remembered to get the CF card...) I'm going to start trying to modify this one to more closely match my car.

Holy crap. Maybe I'll just go ahead and get the Cobb AP for the WRX. That's a big difference in low-end torque.

Looks like it'll do for the WRX what it did for the STi.

edit: wait, that chart is confusing. which one is the Cobb and which one is the testicle guy?

There's several dyno charts in the threads about that base. It's a pretty conservative map; coming up similar to the Cobb AP "Stage 2" OTS map on most of 'em.

I'm most happy with the smoothness and drivability of the tactrix map - it has none of the annoying Cobb jumpiness and surging. I think this is because the Cobb map is super aggressive with the timing and counts on the knock correction to adjust. In places the Cobb map has about 10-deg more advance than the tactrix.
