Stack, I've got a funny story about a Miata. Back in the begining of Oct I was asked to instuct at the Ford GT rally at VIR. A total of 77 Ford GT's attended this yearly event. Unfortunately it rained most of the two days they were running. Knowing this, I brought my miata rather than the corvette for obvious reasons, plus the fact that the vette only has one seat. I rode with or drove with at least seven different GT owners. In the pouring rain the novice GT drivers were no match for the grossly underpowered miata. One of the five drivers I gave a ride along got out of the miata and said that we had passed every car on the track. His wife exclaimed, "in that thing"? He told her to ride with me, and before long I had a line of GT owners asking for ride alongs. Bill Foster had a plaque made that says "that thing" and stuck it on my dash. So my green Miata was named.
Here's a note from one of the GT owners I got today.
Hi Bernie,
I just acquired a '94 "that thing" with the R package (no power options, limited slip rear end, and a few other gizmos). 118,000 miles and runs strong. Hope to get it out on the track soon.
Thanks for introducing me to the Miata. I think it will be a great car to get my kids out on the track with as well.
Hope all is well with you.
Jim
So as you all can see Miata's are formidable in the right environment.
And I'll be joining you soon in iRacing, Gwen won a free months suscription for her third place in solo nationals this year. I believe a console will be under the Xmas tree.
As and adjunct to the story, two cars did pass "that thing" during the two days. The LeMans GT driven by one of the drivers that led LeMans for eight hours, and by the ford factory driver in the Shelby 500 gt mustang.
Both had full wet rain tires. The LeMans GT turned VIR full in the pouring rain at 2:04.
