Kia’s latest Magentis saloon will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September; however, its new name has yet to be confirmed. The US name is Optima, which is not favored in Europe, so it will likely have an all-new name.

According to company insiders, there was a debate whether to call the car K5 (its name in Korea) or Optima. A top-level Kia source said that that a downsized 150hp 1.2-liter turbo powerplant will be included in the engine choices. The new car will be longer, wider and lower than the outgoing model.

The new car will also have a longer wheelbase.

As a result, both cabin and luggage spaces are increased considerably. Kia doesn’t think that the car will be a major seller in Europe but as a volume manufacturer, it believes that it has to compete in the large saloon segment.

It’s anticipated that the demand for the car will come largely from the US and domestic markets, where it’s expected that its much improved styling and dynamics will appeal to buyers. A Kia source disclosed that the new car will have an estate version.

With regards to the body style, Chief designer Peter Schreyer expressed interest in making station wagon and coupé versions of the car. He thinks that the station wagon would only work for Europe and that in the US, it’s the coupé that would do well.

I was getting ready to say that, but then I realized it's like a weird combination of TL, Scion Tc, WRX, BMW.

They need to hire a research team and some real designers, and start making their own cars.

on the other side of that coin there are VERY few cars that are unique anymore.

Pretty much any car design released you will here "boy, that sure looks like an XXXX"

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Many of the designs that do not look like any other current car, look like cars of the past:

Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Miata (Lotus Elan) for example.

Fortunately those were pretty good looking designs rather than modified "eggs" . . .

So, did all the good car designers move to Korea?

Doesn't it seem that the South Korean manufactures just take the lines and styling cues of the more popular Japanese brands?

For example, I do actually like the Genesis, although not at retail of course, but it will be cool when it takes the Hyundai depreciation plunge in a couple of years if it doesn't get pushed into a tough auto-x stock class. My thing is this: it looks like a 370Z, IS250/350, and an RX8.

This Kia screams American car though this time around. It looks like a cross between the Ford Fusion and Pontiac G8. Not a good move.. just sayin' 8)

No wonder: Kia's design chief, Peter Schreyer, worked at Audi and VW.
