It was the equivalent of them patting Mini on the head and telling them how cute they are. Which pretty much sums it up.

Porsche is a great company, wonderful heritage, fantastic cars, BUT, 98% of its new car purchasers are doing so for male enhancement. I think they wussed out. Bring Boris Saad or some RA specialist and beat them by 20 seconds and then have an ad with the "No Substitute" them even if you can buy 3 minis and 5 motorscooters for the same price. Show them crossing the finish line then birds chirping for 20 seconds and then 3 minis come by, while the 5 motorscooters are in the background "watching"

Awesome response from Porsche. Cline, you need to actually race against them and not boost about HPDE point bys. You will gain a whole new level of respect for them ;-)

I still think it's a great marketing move by Mini although I'm sure they didn't expect it to materialize.

What the ad in the Times basically is going to do is perpetualizing the Mini's image of their cars being fun and racy for those on the fence in their purchasing decisions. "Wow, a Mini is racing a 911! They must be faster than I thought!" <off to the dealership to see what the buzz is all about>

Too be fair and balanced, 98% of MINI owners have the car, because it's "cute"....

The 98% number might be an exaggeration, but Cline and Jim both have a point. There's a corps of regular "enhancement" types who pose at DE's, but there's also a good many Porsche racers who can really get it done. PCA race weekends are highly competitive, and from what I understand there's some serious stuff going on with NASA (probably what Jim is talking about) among some "spec" classes.

And how many Corvettes are bought for the same reason? And Lambos? And M3's? And Hummers? :)

Smart marketing move on MINI's part. Especially as they start introducing even less sporting models in an effort to expand their line up.

Sincerely,
Didn't buy a MINI because it was cute

Of course you know what they say about arguing on the internet, BUT, I think the Marketing Deal with Mini was saying we have a street car that will hold up real damn well to your street car. They aren't marketing to those us who actually go out on the track and flog them to death.

As far as real racing, a Mini can't compete, hell they can't beat a miata in the Contentenal Tire challange.

I will admit the worst thing about driving a Mini is the other owners.

Cline, that's going to be true for nearly every car make/model.

He said Hummer heheheh

I still think they should have taken up the challenge, beat them by 20 seconds and then taken out ads and T-shirts that said Porsche > Mini now STFU.

I don't have any desire for a Mini and none really for a Porsche (hell, I have a Camaro that cost me as much as a Porsche). But the marketing struck me as the little guy in the bar who tries to pick a fight with the big guy so he can prove himself.

The big guy looks, shows off some scars and walks away. The chicks dig the big guy and laugh at the little guy. :-)

Cline's only experience with Porsche guys is the guy who does the striptease for him at VIR every summer so he thinks they are all somewhat effeminate posers.
