I have an 8g nano that I think is on its last legs. Lately it's been cutting off in the car and then I get a no IPOD connection error on the display. As a test I placed it on the AC vent in the house to cool it off. After about 15 min, I was able to soft boot it. I took back into the hot car and after just a few minutes, it died again and I was unable to soft boot it while it was hot.

Anyone else every experienced this? As far as I can tell, there's no way to get into the case since it sealed and it looks like the guts would have to pushed out of one end of the case. I was thinking about setting it back to the factory default and starting over w/ the firmware upgrade and reloading my playlists.

Any thought on this? If this is dead, does anyone have a used 8gig they want to sell?

well, I think the resetting of the ipod back to factory settings and then reloading the playlists has worked. Had it in the car for an hour yesterday and no issues. Maybe that was the trick, time will tell...

well, I think the ipod is dead. After the car was sitting in the sun this morning for a few hours, I cranked up the mustang and no ipod connection found. Anyone have one for sale?

I have a 3rd generation Nano that I bought 2 years ago and it's been a dream. I think that the color suits you, personally.

FWIW, you can get 10% off a new one if you take your busted one into the Apple Store

Rodney, you have a 6-CD changer in your car that plays MP3s. Just burn your stuff to CDs and then you can forget about the iPod. Or just listen to the radio. They know what you're supposed to listen to anyway.

As a EE you can't have a device that's cheap and lasts a long time. That being said when there's 10s of millions of something sold even an excellent failure rate of .01% means lots of dead units eventually.

I have trouble with mine in the car when it's hot. I suspect it's the connector.

Heat is a killer of ipods.

I thought I had lost my 4th gen Nano at the Lincoln ProSolo in early May, so my wife bought me a 160gb Classic that I wanted for my birthday (May 25th). Turns out, the co-driver found it in my sunglasses case wedged under the seat of his Corvette yesterday :)

Regardless, the extra space and ability to store about anything I want on the Classic is nice. I had filled the 8GB already on my Nano with songs and needed more space.

Costco has the 8GB 5th gen Nano with video on sale for $126. I bought one for my wife about 2 months ago. It takes reasonably good video too. - AB

I have a 4th gen 20gb that still works great. After years of leaving in the car the battery "inflated" and made the buttons hard to press. I cracked it open and removed some insulation to make some more clearance and now it works again. The battery life sucks though... :D

I need to order a new battery one of these days, however the iphone and internet radio have had me lose interest in fixing the old one.

In any case, if you decide to open it up Rodney, the parts are usually not too bad, and it is easy to open with the right tools.

Rodney, how are you feeding this into your stereo? I've been using a Kensington charger/audio combo unit for my iphone, but today it started picking up interference from the engine. I guess I'm going to have to pick another adapter.

I've got an add-on iPod player for the factory radio from Peripheral electronics ( I think) I picked up from Amazon. If you have the factory satellite radio, it plays through the Sat 2 setting. I also ran the cable into the center console. It really doesn't get that hot in the console, so maybe vibrations have killed it. Regardless, it works and then fails.

I'd like to know how to open this. There are no seams on the side, so everything has to slid out of the end of the case. There are 2 small flanges on the end of the case that hold everything in. I'm clueless as to how to get to the inside. Even if I was to get it out, I have no way to test what is bad, I'm just not that talented to diagnose electrical stuff...

I used a small flat blade screwdriver (and it left a mark), but there are tools available (from what I understand) like this.

Honestly, other than the battery crapping out I'm not sure what would be effected by the heat. Obviously there are other components in there and they are all heat sensitive, but the battery is usually the most susceptible by far.

Rodney, good deal on an 8GB nano on woot today, only 89.99 and you don't have to have a pink one. Its a refurb, but do you care?
