Whenever I'm out of town, I usually stumble across a 100% gasoline station... which is completely awesome. I mean, who doesn't love 3-4 more mpg when they're on holiday?

Anyways, every station I've been to around here has E10 and I was wondering if anybody knows of stations where they sell E0.

If I understand correctly, NC in one of the few states that doesn't require the labeling of gas carrying 10% e. If a station carries it, it's voluntarily. I think we need to create a petition and force lawmakers to change this one. Should be easy for them since they seem to have their fingers in everything else.

How about we just ask all the stations, and only give our business to the ones who give us an answer?

You mean we could handle the problem ourselves without petitioning the government for help? I'm liking you more and more Mike. . .

The Exxon station at East Club Blvd. and I85 in Durham has a huge banner out front that reads "NO ETHANOL HERE." It's usually pretty crowded.

Might be fun to send Exxon an email and see if they can give a list of no-ethanol stations in the area...

I've seen a few stations that actually advertise "No Ethanol" but NC doesn't require pump labeling.

Here's guide:

http://www.fuel-testers.com/state_guide ... _laws.html

It is sorta strange that the gov is anal about making sure you get the volume you pay for, w/o a care that you get shorted on the amount of energy you buy.

Found this site which I believe is a relatively new effort:

http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=NC

If anyone can confirm that the Durham station is still ethanol free, please add it!

the two Exxon stations in Greenville both have stickers on the pumps that say 100% gas.

I haven't been by that one on East Club in a while - I'll have to check back by sometime.

Casting aside the political stuff for a second, what's the downside, exactly, of gas with ethanol in it? I'm talking about late model, OBD2 or newer cars. The various 1988-1990 CRX Sis I've had didn't like the ethanol stuff at all. But my S2000 seems unaffected by it.

Some folks worry about the effects of ethanol in a fuel system that may not have been designed for it.
That aside, the energy content is less. Which is what you're really buying in the first place as opposed to a certain volume.
A few years ago there were concerns about "hot fueling" in Raleigh. When you buy fuel you really should be buying by the pound (note that aviators typically report their fuel load as xxx pounds) but as a practical matter its much easier to measure liquids by volume. Since fuel tanks are buried the assumption is that the fuel in the buried tank is at a fairly constant temperature which allows you to assume a certain density and equate a volume to a weight. "Hot fueling" happening when fuel is sold so quickly that the fuel from a tanker (which is likely warmer in the summer and less dense) is dispensed from a pump before reaching the assumed ambient temp (and density/weight) in the underground tank. "Hot" fuel is less dense, so you are getting less weight (and less energy) per volume.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/ ... 3244.shtml

So, back to my point, the very gov that was worried about all of the above now completely ignores the fact that ethanol has less energy per gallon than pure gasoline. The cynics would say ... follow the money.

OK, got it on the energy. As far as effects on the fuel system, is that still a concern? By "still," I mean on cars that were built in, just to pick a number, the last decade. Since ethanol fuel has been around for close to 20 years now, does it still damage fuel systems, or have auto manufacturers made the necessary changes?

BTW, some diesels react poorly to ULSD. I had to replace a drain valve on my F250 because of leaking o-rings. It's widely held that the deterioration of these o-rings is caused by ULSD - this is a part that didn't experience failures as recently as a few years ago, so it seems like an easy leap to make that ULSD could be to blame.

FYI

My normal commute with a 2001 Mustang GT is essentially all freeway (540 and 40) between north Raleigh and Tryon Rd in Cary. I always refuel the car at Capri's in Cary which is Exxon. "Summer" gas mileage has consistently been between just under 24 to just under 25. The car is almost never used for any other driving. In "winter" it drops 1 or 1.5 mpg. These numbers have been the same since 2006. If Exxon is using ethanol the impact on my car is zero.

Unfortunately I fill my race car from a different Exxon station much closer to home.

The BP on Leesville road at 540 has pump labels which say max 10% Ethanol. Edit to correct after actually checking the pump this morning. See later post for more info.
