I'm trying to replace a front axle and I can get the damn roll pin out. How did you do it so easily when we (you) fixed a cv boot on my car?

If you could call me that would be great! 919-622-7356

conversely, if anybody has Kevin's number, can you pass it on? I really need to get this car up today.

got Kevin's number but gave up on the axle. I'm going to take the car to work and break out the BIG jack and stands. I think I just needed more space to swing the hammer.

If I have any problems at all, I will still be giving Kevin a call.

Thanks guys.

I just use a drill bit of the right diameter, and put a ratchet extension on it to hammer on.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll give that a try. Thanks Kevin.

One more question for you Kevin...do I really have to take the ball joint apart? I don't remember doing that when we replaced the cv boot on the passenger side. Yet, the tutorial on Scoobymods show the ball joint being seperated and the brake caliper bracket being removed.

If you have female inboard joint type axles, you don't have to pop the LCA ball joint. At full droop, you should be able to get it off the tranny stub and then pull it out of the hub...though if it is frozen/rusted to the hub, it may be necessary.

And if that's the case, I'd rather remove the strut bolts before the lower ball joint (they can be a mega PITA on an older car). In this scenario you can carefully mark where your upper strut bolt is positioned so you don't mess up your alignment (or measure your current camber and set it back to that when you are done).

Nope. Just remove the two lower bolts from the strut where it bolts to the hub, and the hub will tilt far enough to pull the axle out. Much easier & less destructive that way.

since we're into subie help here, I need to replace an axle on my son's '98 legacy wagon. Not sure which side yet, he says it's poping when he turns it and I haven't looked under the car yet. Any issues I need to be aware of?

Probably right side. The inner grease boot pops open due to heat from the exhaust. If you're replacing the axle, make sure you get a new axle nut. And be careful if you have to hammer the axle to get it out of the hub. That's about it.

If you need a new axle, let me know as I have a few sitting around.

I'll let you know in a few days after I can get hold of the car.

Thanks Brian and Kevin for the help/advice!
