After seeing Richard post about the 10yrs old driving I'm having a question about the driver eligibility in AX.
Here from the THSCC site.

2.1. Participants must have a valid driver's license at the time of the event and must be prepared to present such license during registration. Learner's permits are not acceptable.

My son Olivier will be taking driving school this summer at his High School, and I would like to have him start to do some AX as part of his driver learning process. (obviously not with the Porsche but with either the Honda that is plan to be his first car or the Miata) and he will definitively have a learner's permit to start with.

Do the reason for the " Learner's permits are not acceptable " are because of Insurance or something else?

I would like for sure to have him start as early as possible.

Patrice,

Not an answer to your question, but when my kids were 15 (they're 23 and 21 now) I sent them each to the teen driving school at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg. As long as the kid has a learner's permit, they can enter the school. I can say it had a dramatic effect on both of them -- enough so that they both went back when they were 17 and took the 2-day course there too. I viewed it as a small investment on a lifetime of driving.

Chuck

You said the magic word, insurance...

that said, keep your eyes open for another street survival. There is talk that one will pop up soon. Per the street survival website...

What is the minimum and maximum age a student can be to participate in a Tire Rack Street Survival® school?

Licensed or permitted drivers, ages 16 to 21 are allowed in the program.

Maybe Triad is different, they've got a 10 and 11 year old racing in their club. Granted, they are in a kart, and they go like 10 mph around the whole course, but perhaps they are more lenient/have different insurance (or perhaps carts are a different deal).

That's the answer, carts are a different deal.

SCCA i am told is allowing 15 year olds with learner's permits to compete in AutoX. apparently there is one this weekend in VA somewhere.

i too am curious as i have a budding HPDE Champion in the house and i would like to get her started as early as possible.

and sadly i will probably have to opt for the BMW Performance Center route. poor kid, oh wait what?
