my garage stereo is a '70s era Marantz amp with a Pioneer tuner. the right channel has been wonky for awhile now but yesterday the left channel crapped out completely.

seeing as this is an undeniably classic audiophile / stoner setup from my misguided youth, i would love to keep this system working as it was designed.

anyone know of a shop that works on old stereo equipment?

I forget the name of the place, but there at least used to be a stereo shop straight across the street from the Hillsborough Street Char-Grill in downtown Raleigh. You might start there.

DaNang me, DaNang me, why don't they get a rope and HANG ME! Is it me or is it too early for being that loud? Hey it's late, it's oh-six-hundred. What's the oh stand for? Oh my God it's early. Speaking of early...

Stephen, give it up man. It is 2010. Hollow out the amp and hide an ipod set up in there you can buy at Target for $60 and it will sound better.

I actually have the the 7 band short wave radio my parents gave me for Christmas when I was 12 as my garage radio, but I listen to my ipod!

in all seriousness, you will probably pay more to have that fixed than you would to buy a used receiver off of Craigslist. I sold a Sony receiver I bought in 2000 for $50 in 2008, worked perfectly. Those kinds of deals are out there every day on the CL.

Now...if the Marantz gives you a good place to hide your stash, well...let's not talk about that on a public forum. 8)

As I recall Oak Park provides free estimates . . . but you have to call them back and keep on them to get the info. My Kenwood just needed the volume control potentiometer cleaned so it was cheap. (I could have done it myself if I had known it was that simple).

My parents (in their 90's) have done this with console TV's over the decades. Kept the cabinet but without the old electronics. Their current one was gutted years ago and filled with a 20 inch Sony. The Sony is now gone and a 42 inch flat screen stands on the cabinet and the cable box, VHS, and DVD player are inside.

Bernie,

138th Aviation which was part of the 509th radio research group. Basically Army Security Agency (the recruiter told me no ASA in Vietnam . . . liar). Small fixed wing planes with lots of antennas. We were very popular with Marine ground forces.

I worked in the comm center from July 68 to July 69. Good timing since I arrived after the famous Tiet offensive and left before the withdrawal started. Far fewer middle of the night rocket attacks compared to before or after.

Dick, that was great timing. I was there from Sept of 67 to May of 68, and again in 69 thruogh 70 until we were withdrawn. I do remember the army aircraft with all the antenae I seem to recall some Mohawks at DaNang also. Can't remember what side of the field you all were on. I did however spend more than a few days at China Beach with a group of friends from the 95th Evac hospital. And just for info purposes the rocket attacks were worse on the withdrawl than they were at Tet. Its unusual to run across a Viet Nam vet in this group. Be well Brother

Bernie,

You be well also! Too many folks were evac'd including the flatbed trailer loads of caskets I would see far too often. Mostly Marines probably from DaNang.

Thanks to you and the rest of the Marines for taking care of me while I was there. My unit was on the "Marine side" of the base. I forget the compass directions. When I arrived we were in OLD white buildings near a big chopper hanger. Then we built a wooden, etc. hanger near the end of the runway directly across from the AF bomb dump. Our ops unit when we relocated was a quonset hut on about a 3 foot concrete wall. I knew it got worse during the withdrawal. I think my unit moved to somewhere "less nice". When I first arrived we lived in "villas" (aka DUMPS) just off the base. Then we got real barracks on base which we then built rooms and ceilings in. I got to China Beach once as I recall. Lots of PX runs, of course. My unit's aircraft were U8's and a couple of Otters. No Mohawks when I was there. I got to see U8's at a museum at Forbes Field one year at Nats.

Now I remember, you were at the south end of the field, Just a short ways down from the OV10's. The AF bomb dump was directly across the field as was the mortuary. When you mentioned the flat beds with all the coffins I remembered, Thats real hard to forget.
Sorry to have high jacked your thread "Flat Spot" we'll turn it back over to ya.
