I need some help from you chemical heads out there. There is a TSB on the mustang to seal up 10 seals that are located under the cowl cover. If these aren't tight, the seals will allow water to pond in the passenger side foot well.

As it turns out, the cabin filter is also under the cowl cover, so I checked all of the seals and all are slightly loose. I figure now is the time for some preventative maintenance. I called the dealer, and asked about ordering the Motorcraft TA-2 sealer. A 10oz tube is 45 bucks, that's freaking outrageous!!

This is supposed to be a urethane based sealer. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheaper alternative? The TSB states NOT to use a silicon sealer. I'd appreciate some help here....

Windshield adhesive is urethane based. But nothing will get it out of your clothes if you get it on you.

Gotta love it when the fix to a manufacturer's design problem requires that the end user purchase ridiculously overpriced goo only available from said manufacturer.

Similarly, I currently own an '04 Honda Pilot and was floored to see that Honda does this with their transmission fluid. The "normal use" maintenance schedule shows a surprisingly short (30Kmi) interval for tranny fluid changes, the stuff is ~$8/quart, and using any other tranny fluid is supposedly a major no-no.

If there's a TSB, why not just take it to the Ford dealer and let them do it under warranty?

Or, look up Sikaflex (lots of formulas but pricey) or 3M 5200 sealer.

3M makes a couple of different sealers that should work OK if you can't find 5200 or if it does not meet your requirements.

Car is out of warranty, so the stealer is not an option. Thanks for the info on the 5200. Any ideas where I can buy it local?

score..... home depot carries the 3m 5200 marine based sealer and it is urethane based. Good call Bret, thanks for the lead. Bonus for me is it's white, matches the car. I'll clean everything and install it tomorrow.
