On another forum I frequent, somebody linked to this post on Bimmer forums http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=15521611&postcount=61. It deals with Texas, but...

Quote:
The guy claims to be an insurance adjuster and says, basically, that Texas (and North Carolina) requires insurance companies to use a prescribed policy, which means one written by the state. This policy does not have any exclusions for HPDEs.

Does NC's prescribed policy not have any exclusions for HPDEs much like Texas'?

Unless something has recently changed, yes.

First, you can't have your insurance with somebody else, have a wreck on track and say "Cline Hall said it was covered, pay me" BUT All policies in North Carolina are approved by the NC Insurance Commissioners Office. It is my understanding that no revisions restricting coverage for HPDE's or an "on track event"

For a fun night, pull you policy out and read it to be sure. Probably no use calling your agent and asking, if you do he will probably cancel you because the insurance industry thinks people like us are crazy and they don't want to insure us.

Yeah, I understand. I just read this thing online about NC and Texas not having exemptions for driving events, and went "oh man, this is huge" because I was under the impression that insurance companies aren't really into insuring "high speed driving events" because what type of sane person would do something so reckless (more accurately: wreck-less). But I didn't know that they don't write the insurance policy and that the state does.

I read up on some of the language online, and there is no explicit exemption of coverage for track days. Sanctioned (or unsanctioned) racing obviously is barred, but not driving schools.

But to be 100% planted in reality, if something goes awry at an HPDE, the insurance company will pay out; however, they'll just drop you the second the check clears.

You guys seriously expect your insurance company to cover an incident while on track?

Yes I do. And I have had several friends have their incidents covered. While participating in HPDEs, not Time Trials of course.

No but I would expect my insurance to cover a single vehicle accident while driving on a rural road in Virginia :)

"Sir, these black marks on your car look like you ran into a bunch of tires, how'd that happen?"

"well, I think I must have hit them when my car went into the ditch after I swerved to avoid the deer that jumped out in front of me. You know how those Virginia rednecks just dump all their crap in the closest ditch- hey, that dent there looks kinda like a refrigerator made it......."

The insurance company covered the 2004 vette that I wrecked at Rockingham without a whimper, 32000$ worth. So yes I do expect to be covered.
It does help however to have the CHA as your agent!!!!

Key factors:

(1) Not a timed event

(2) Instructor on board.

(Of course, All the above become moot for TT, etc.)

How is that different from a "Street Survival Course" or "Defensive Driving 101?"

(edit: apparently those two factors don't matter, as per posts later in the thread.)

Or, you could be like me and buy a cheaper car for HPDE and don't report anything for an insurance claim. Diff' strokes, I guess.

They legally cannot exclude HPDEs in NC, so why not?

I would expect some push-back, but they would be obligated to cover it.

So to rehash this one more time: If you injure your car in a motorsports event in NC, expect to be covered. Also expect to be dropped as soon as anyone in corporate finds out it was a "speed event".

Best plan is to find an insurance agent who understands how the system works and understands that participants in HPDEs are in fact better drivers than the masses, and will submit an insurance claim with a minimum of information to resolve the claim, ie my tongue-in-cheek comment about a single vehicle incident on a rural road.

This is all in theory, as I have never claimed an HPDE incident, nor have I asked my agent how it would work if I had to :)
