A few years ago I remember going into a modeling shop and seeing not just model kits but also components. They had quite a few wheels, accessories, and then a whole section of just engines and interior pieces if you wanted to build your own 1:18 or 1:24 car models in either plastic or diecast. That shop has been gone a while, but does anyone know of an online place for the same items. I am going to try to recreate my car in 1:18. Since there really isn’t a full model that matches I can get the body from a kit, then put in an engine and make the cage out of rods.

Anyone else here who makes custom models have advice as well. Maybe some pictures.

There are quite a bit of aftermarket parts for 1/24 scale, photo etched detail parts and cast resin or metal parts and accessories to conversion bodies to complete low volume kits, but not much for 1/18 AFAIK. 1/18 seems to be popular with the buy em and set em on a shelf crowd, especially since they are typically made of metal (1/18 is commonly refered to as "die cast" scale) and so more difficult to modify than plastic. Think of 1/24 as HO scale to model railroading, and 1/18 as Lionel.
Pick up a copy of Scale Auto at your local bookstore for manufacturer leads.
