So earlier today I was ripping a Steven Stills album called Manassas, one of my favorites by the way.... anyway, one of the song titles was "So Begins the Task".

After falling victim to all the infomercials, I took the plunge and ordered the p90x DVD's. I think there's a theme going on here. First the rogain and now the body. No hope for the mind!

After several evenings of making sure I could pass the "basics" test, I started up the PS2, popped in the DVD and proceeded to have my ass kicked. Holy smokes, these guys are intense. I did a 1/3rd to a 1/4tr of what they were doing. That's ok by me thought, it's a start.

I was hesitant to post this here, but I figure if anyone is going to give me static and more important, encouragement, it's this crowd. I'll post my beginning stats in a few days, still getting all the downloads organized.

The tough part is going to keep up w/ the schedule, but w/ kids gone, no car work to do and can't play outside, I figure why not try it.

So the DVD's may be for sale soon, but I'll give it 30 days before I decide to bail.

Time for a coke and Cheetos!

Ive got p90X also. i found the hardest thing was finding time EVERYDAY to do the workouts. you pretty much cant go anywhere for 3 months, unless there are weights available, and im not the kind of guy who's going to goto the gym and put the DVD in there. haha

but its a good system though

there is a new workout out, called Insanity (or something like that) and its all cardio, and i think less time and its endorsed by the same folks as p90x, beachbody (i think). and no weights involved as well. but its crazy cardio. same price too, like $120

GO FOR IT, Rodney!

Good luck with it--just remember you're not 25 anymore, so don't jump in like a crazy man. Ease yourself into it. Stretch before you start. Don't forget the Metamucil (kidding). The last thing you need is an exercise-induced injury trying to get back into shape--something I see a lot in my practice.

Let me know when you're done with it, I know (cough) someone that might be interested...

Interesting you mention stretching. That's part of every DVD, at least 5-10 min of stretching prior to gettting started. Damn, you get tired from just that! They also have stretch breaks during the exercises.

so, instead of giving lots of details on body measurements, I figure the basics will do for now.

Starting measurements:
Weight........230
waist...........39-1/4"
pull ups.......all of 4 ( I like there instructions, you are to do the exercises in good form to failure)
push ups......20 (to failure)

updates in about 2 weeks....

one of my best friends is doing this and wants me to do it too. While I like to stay in good shape that is just to extreme for me. If I got ripped like that I would have to beat the chicks off with a stick, Right steve? Good luck to you though!

Good luck Rodney! I have a few friends that have the P90x and they say it's tough but definitely a great workout if you stick to it.

I'm kind of in the same boat of trying to shape up for a few 5ks in the Spring and the mountain bike season. Having a newborn makes it really tough to workout, especially with the sleep adjustment and of course work doesn't stop.

On the flip side having too much time to workout can be a curse to, so it all boils down to discipline. I've found that tracking your workouts is the key to avoid procrastination for sure because then you feel like you can't let yourself down, or so I trick myself into thinking that. :)

My trick is to do as many types of exercise as possible like spin class or Bodypump ( a terribly named light weight, high rep fitness class), swimming at Pullen, cycling, and basketball to keep things fresh and interesting. Now if only I could cut the beer and crappy food- haha!

Keep us posted on the progress...

admittedly, I did nothing last night but watch DVR'd racing and drink copious amounts of beer. Crappy day at work for a Friday. That said, I did the plyometrics this morning. LOTS of leg workouts. Simple stuff, but do it for 45 min and you'll start to sweat. My heart rate was in the 130 range. Not sure if that's good or bad, but I know it was pounding.

Tomorrow is shoulders and arms. I'm going to be dead by Wed. I am proud to say that I have done everything, but in modified form. Maybe in a few weeks I can do the whole routine.

Target HR is roughly about (220-age) * 0.8 for a male. There is actually a range of HR targets, depending on your activity.

Here's a great calculator

Good for you, Rodney. Working out of any type (modified or otherwise) is better than sitting on the couch, drinking beer and watching racing. Ok, it's not as fun, but it's better for the body. Do what you can and stick with it. Getting started is the hardest part!!! Good luck!

so.... I'm into day 11 of the p90x workout and I have to say it's kicking my ass. I'm still unable to everything on the DVD's, but headway is being made. Comparing my charts from the first week to this week you can see an improvement in weights and reps.

The real killer here is the ab ripperX. I have yet to keep up w/ these nut jobs on the DVD. I'm having to modify the routine just to keep the reps up, but I am keeping up.

I'm frustrated w/ no weight loss considering the workouts are every night for at least 1 hour. The upside is the energy levels are up and I'm generally feeling better. Other than being sore from trying to push it every night, I am starting to feel a difference in the body. No cokes in the morning has been the toughest thing to cut out, but now I'm making it through the day w/ no caffeine and only drinking water during the day. I'll take that as a win.

Just trust that the weight loss thing will happen. I find it's much easier to tolerate the scales if you only hit them once a month or so. Daily gets old fast, as they're never what you want.

I'm with you on the soda thing. I can safely say that I am officially an addict in the strictest sense of the word. Seriously. Those things call out to me on a level that's hard to believe. I do still have dessert maybe one out of three days or so, but I'm down to one soda per week. I could much easier kill dessert entirely than soda, though.

The big thing is how you FEEL. Sounds like you're making headway. And don't worry about the ab stuff...it'll come. People who do a lot of ab stuff find it so easy that it's REALLY hard to imagine how hard some of the most basic stuff can be to build up for a beginner. I still remember the days when I couldn't do a sit-up (not one) without something holding my feet down. Now I do sets and sets of them with an eight pound medicine ball over my head and throwing it off a cinder block wall (it is one of the ones that bounces, not the squishy ones) at 20 reps.
