I drove a V6 Accord coupe with a manual when my wife was looking at her i4 sedan (5AT) that we eventually bought. The v6 coupe was very refined for a Honda....almost too much so. Very soft ride rate. You couldn't hear the engine at 5k rpms and the tranny shifter was rubbery and the clutch was so soft, there was no feel to it. Anyway, I know you don't want a manual.

Honda has been known in the past for making mediocre slushboxes, but the 5AT in my wifes 09 Accord is quite a bit of improvement from the 4AT in her previous civic. It shifts smoothly AND fast (not one or the other like previously). It downshifts as you decel rather than waiting for you to get back on it like in the other Honda auto's I've driven.

Anyway, the 5AT V6 coupe seems as though it will fit your bill: auto, 2 doors, room for a few bodies in the trunk, soft-ish ride rate and yet power to boot.

James,

Good info since the Accord Coupe is on my possibles list. Might be too long for our garage.

Is the i4 a 4 cylinder? If so, how is the normal and hill driving in regard to downshifts to hold speed or accelerate?

The Sedan is BIG...it barely fits in my garage. The coupe is definitely shorter if I'm not mistaken.

The 4 cyl is a 2.4L K series so it's pretty torquey for a 4 banger. Very rarely will you have to floor it to persuade the tranny to downshift (as in it can generally get you up the hill with an unnoticeable 5->4 instead of a loud and unsmooth 4->2 like her previous Civic). The only thing I've noticed is that unless you come to an absolute stop (ie 0.0 mph), it might not downshift into 1st such that you'll be in 2nd so if you need to get on it to get past someone on a merging on ramp, it will require a heavy push on the pedal to instigate a 2->1 downshift. However, the v6 will have enough low-ish rpm torque to avoid this I would guess.

However, with your budget, I'd get the v6 anyway because the fuel economy of the 4 cyl is not that much better than the v6....she gets about 26 mpg with 95% city driving...on highway trips, it's got 30-31mpg. The v6 would probably get 24-25.

Marty,
Actually I do want a hatchback, just a sloped one, not a "station wagon" :P
I have a 1.6 liter Pinto engine in my Formula Ford. :)
I traded my first Mustang (1969 GT 351 4V) on a 74 (lemon) yellow Vega Hatch. Traded it a few months later on my 1974 Datsun 260Z after taking a Bondurant course at Sears Point and driving the piss out of a 240 all day. Considering how many autocrosses, including a National Championship, I won with the Z, it was a good choice.!!! :D :D

No problem Dick. I love this little beasts. I owned several of them. I would never buy a Vega. Even a Chevy die-hard knows better...

The Vega (purchased after the 1973 gas crisis with lines for you young folk) one of my big lessons in who not to trust. In this case even Road & Track positive reviews. What a dog. The California version in 1974 could only have a big one barrel carb. The engine response was so poor that I couldn't rev the engine with throttle blips for heel and toe downshifts. First gear of the 4 speed was so tall that it was like driving a 5 speed starting in second. Great fun on San Francisco hills. :( . Another issue was the brochures showed it in the snow with skis. What I learned while reading the owners manual while the dealer tried to fix some of the pre-delivery problems was that the GT version tires were too big to allow chain clearance with California Mountain mandated tire chains in many snow conditions. And on and on and on and on.

The only "good thing" about the car is that it was so bad that I had no problem taking the trade-in loss on the Datsun 260Z the next summer. :D :D :D

I agree. However, tiny trunk.

Have you test drove one of these? I use to have the G35 sedan and absolutely loved driving it! I don't remember the trunk being especially small. I will say I sold it though because I was tired of the bad gas mileage and the requirement of premium gas (when gas was at $4.00, this sucked!).

Judi,

I love the looks of the G37 Coupe. However trunk is 7.4 cubic feet. Hardly bigger than a Miata :( ) Plus the premium fuel, etc. is a "negative" to be balanced.

sexy 328 Mike. 8)

Dick, my wife just picked up a '07 328i automatic with sport, CPO 6yr /100k warranty with 18.5k miles on it. in your price range also.

the 3 series has been voted among the 10 best cars for 19 years in a row now.

it is a four door, but the rear seats fold down, plenty of room.

straight six with good grunt.

plus as a CPO it is covered under Free Maintennance for remainder of 4yrs / 50k miles also.

well I do have a thing for Mini's. They still hold their value better than anything. The Automatics in the second gen are quite good, paddle shifters, I actually enjoyed driving my daughters and it was not an S. S should be pretty good. I think the ride is quite comfortable.

What about a mazda 3 speed?

I don't think Mazda 3 Speeds come with automatics. If they did I might be trying to talk myself into a 4 door station wagon  . I haven't owned a 4 door car since 1967 when I sold my 66 Toyota Corona (the Toyota that got Toyota started in the US) to my Dad when I joined the Army. FYI when I returned from Vietnam I took delivery of the 69 Mustang ordered in a PX in Nam. 2 doors ever since.

Thanks Steve. Not shopping now. When you keep cars for well over 10 years it typically takes awhile to even focus on what kind of car. :? That is what this exercise is all about.

FYI do BMW automatics hold up for well over 100K miles like our "cheap" 97 Mustang's has? Assuming it isn't abused.

50/50 probably Dick. never had one that long.

as a point of reference we just replaced the tranny in a 2004 suburban with 80k on the clock. DD, no towing.

Steve,

GM light truck autos have a bad reputation. Steve Hoelscher who owned a transmission shop for many years has posted all sorts of info on various truck transmission durability (or lack of) in the Towing Forum of SCCA Forums. Bottom line: GM's are bad, Fords are good. Our old Dodge 727 3spd is good (whew). Anybody who wants lots of tow vehicle info should look for Steve's posts. Lots of good info from others also. Surprisingly, manuals don't necessarily do well.

Dick
