I was just thinking that a previous gen Cobra might be a whole lot of fun.

If you are looking to shake things up, why not a sport bike?

Seems to me you can get 3 of them for your budget, so you will have plenty of spares. I also recall track events being possible for bikes, so that is a go (no roll bar needed).

I know it won't have 300+ HP, but I'm fairly certain you will be faster than most of the cars on the road.

That classifies as a convertible, right?

It really is hard to not recommend a Z06, either C5 or C6.

On the BMW side you could try an M5, but mileage would have to be high.

Also as for the 350Z thing, I do now a couple of Turboed cars for sale in the 400 HP range.

There's also the STi and Evo.

The answer to the question is C5 Z06. It just is.

I'd actually be looking for a C5 FRC from '99-'00. They are fairly easy to find in the mid teen $$ wise, should be very good for the new AS, will meet all of Mike's conditions and will allow some budget for upgrades like shocks, extra wheels, etc.

Granted, I would prefer Mike in a C5 Z06 so that SS becomes a class for THSCC at some point :) - AB

Edit: Here is a pretty one: FRC Z51

It's a little a little higher priced than most, but has the Z51 package and isn't modded like crazy. - AB

Anybody want to start a pool on how long Mike is satisfied with what ever he comes up with?

An early CTS-V is gonna come close to this price range last time I looked.

You can find CTS-V's for under $20k pretty easily now. Nice ones.

Of course I'm gonna say C5Z, to get one much under $20K you have to go with an '01 model. They go for much less because of the lower power and purported engine problems, but I think the engine problems are over stated and if the car already has over 60K miles and no problems have manifest it is my understanding that they likely won't, besides new replacement crate engines are relatively cheap.

Of course what you really should do is buy my C4 freeing me up to by a C5. :D

Z06. but you will be hard pressed to find one worth a damn in your price range Mike. however as i typed that statement i was thinking if anyone can it would be you.

2004 is arguably the best year for the C5. haven't looked lately but that puts you at 25 - 28k.

alright as many of you know i sold mine recently. do i miss it? yes and no. i hate i don't have it anymore and i wanted it to be a permanent fixture in the garage. but driving it was a mixed bag of things.

sure it pulled like a rocket, but it is a raw unhinged beast even at moderate traffic ticket speeds. visibility is a learned exercise, you just hope you are far enough in front of everyone else. the interior is sparse.

i find i enjoy my X5 when hot rodding about town, and the acceleration isn't that far off the Z06.

there are only two types of people in this world, Corvette guys and the un-appreciative rest of the population. IMO, ya gotta be a little off to own and drive a Corvette. i plan to hopefully have another one day. probably a convertible.

oh yeah, Michelin Pilot Sports II are the tire you would want for the car. $1350 / set.

With Mike's ability to drive hard, anything short of a actual race car will require him to "manage" the brakes based on what I've read about even Z06's on racing forums (T1 SCCA). Forget it with a Mustang I'm sure.

Sounds like if you want a somewhat practical play car with TORQUE but not too expensive. How about a regular Vette? If you aren't into the Vette "image" and don't want to spend a ton of bucks, it sure sounds like a Mustang or the last of the previous Camaros. Lots of Mustangs to pick from. Almost all the GT versions can have all sorts of brake upgrades, superchargers added, suspension stuff, etc. Hopefully "practical" (I've daily driven Mustangs since 1969 with a gap between 73 and 88 . . . ).

There may be lots of 2005 plus Mustangs on sale as the 412 HP 2011 GT hits the streets this Spring.

FYI, low end big torque is neat in traffic. Hardly any "need" to make sure you are in the "right" gear. Just lean on the sucker at 1500 rpm or so.

Dick (who may "settle" for a 305 HP V-6 in a year or two).
