My contractors just stopped by and saw the freebie King Motorsports plate frame on the Si I picked up a few years ago at the ITR Expo and told me about this new law. It makes total sense, but still is a bummer to those that don't like the look of the 'naked plate'. Figured I'd share...

DMV
NEW LAW PROHIBITS STATE NAME, STICKERS BEING HIDDEN ON LICENSE PLATES Thursday, November 19, 2009

Beginning Dec. 1, Operators Can Be Cited, Later Fined

RALEIGH — Beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1, a new law goes into effect that requires the state’s name across the bottom of the plate as well as the year and month stickers on a license plate to be fully visible. They can no longer be partially covered by a license frame.

Vehicle owners can be cited for committing an infraction and, after Nov. 30, 2010, fined $100 for the violation.

The law was introduced in the 2009 session of the General Assembly and was supported by law enforcement officials because it increases the readability of registration information on the plates and helps identify vehicles registered in North Carolina.

I wonder if they will enforce this with respect to the Fraternal Order of Police badges you see bolted onto license plates? They commonly cover up one of the above items.

You can still find plate covers that do not cover that information. So your plate won't look naked ;-)

I have a factory cover on my Z06 that does not obscure any of that. It's black plastic but they also come chrome etc...

I saw a frame that completely covered the "North Carolina" on a plate after the law went into effect. The frame said "NC Judicial Board."

There should be a good bit of covers that comply with this law. NC isn't the first state to pass it by far.

It wasn't clear from my comment above, but I think this law is a good thing. I just hope it isn't selectively enforced.

Frankly, I'd much rather see them enforce some other traffic laws, like maybe the "turn your lights on when its raining" law than this one.

I've only lived in NC for a few years. Does NC have the concept of primary and secondary offenses?
