Whirlpool 2 TON (24000 BTU) Window AC unit - $225

Gently used Whirlpool 24000 BTU window AC with digital thermostat and remote control - model ACQ244XL1. I have been using this in my 900 sqft garage for a few years, it works amazing. Only occasional use -- couple days a year in the summer. Was mounted up high in the wall so it's in good shape. Removed because I'm upgrading to a heat pump. Includes remote and original manual. No problems. $225. I'm in west cary near High House & Hwy 55. Call Mike at 919-454-5445 or reply to ad.

24000 BTU or 2 tons is rated for 1200-1600 sq ft. Requires a 230V 20A outlet and an opening 26 1/2" wide by 20" high. See here for manual and specs:

Comparable new units sell for $490

What are you doing for garage cooling now?

Check the original post. Heat Pump.

We have a separate heat pump for our 2 car garage and I would suggest if you plan on running it regularly to get an insulated door. Our non-insulated metal door is like having a window open. After insulating it, it cut down on run time tremendously, but I would prefer to replace the door with a truly insulated door like you see in some of the colder climate areas. - AB

The same mini-split system that Dustin has. It's not as big (18,000btu) but I plan on leaving it set at like 80F in the summer and 60F in the winter, so it should work fine. I got it a lot cheaper last year than I can find it for now...

Garage is fully insulated. Not really really well (R13 and the budget insulated doors), but good enough that it holds heat and cool just fine.

I've been looking at these also. Does a pro need to do the final setup and what size hole do you need in the wall?

I installed myself. I have a vac pump and auto AC gauges which I hear fit the r410a fittings just fine. The outside unit comes pre-charged. Only issue is that the lineset and inside unit have to be evacuated using a "valve core remover tool" with a side adapter. I ordered one on ebay, will be here tomorrow. Will see if it works OK! After the vac, you just open the 2 valves on the outside unit to fill the lineset and inside unit ... no extra refrigerant needed.

The inside unit hole/mount is the tricky part. Since I have pegboard walls, I just left off a big like 8x8" piece for all the lines to run down inside the wall. Then they exit the wall outside via one hole for wiring (straight into the disconnect), one 2.5" hole for the insulated lines (right below disconnect), and one 3/4" hole for a PVC drain line.

All the lines and wires are packed into a space I had between studs which is about 3" wide. It was tight, but doable. Took 3-4 evenings to get it all the way I wanted it.

If you want some pics let me know

Nice. We have one of those in the wiring closet at work, 'tho it's not metered so Regency won't put power to it. :-( (also, the heat exchanger is in the plenum. i.e. inside the building. not sure why they did that, esp. when the 15ton unit in the DC on the other side of the wall goes to the roof.)
