After working on this 1999 VW Golf for a while I'm finally getting around to learning that some of these things came with a rear anti-sway bar....mine did not.
Anyone have a wimpy stock bar lying about that they would consider parting with? I'm accustomed to driving rallycross cars with a loose rear end; no rear bar is likely to make this car push like a pig.

Have you pinged the guys a Black Forest?

Even with a bar, with it striped out, there's next to no weight in the back, so expect it to be a 3-wheeled, dirt drifting piggy. The ASR is going to try to limit that, so (a) turn that off every time the car is started, (b) disable/remove the ABS controller (unplug the wheel speed sensors will get ya' mostly there.)

(Ask Zimmer what happens when you turn the ASR off in an unloaded bug :-) That made VIR-N T7 "interesting".)

Pete checked with Black Forrest and they have a new bar. I would just like to go cheap and find a used one if I can.

Indeed. New is mighty costly. (25mm H&R 220$)

It's the same bar as the 98-11 New Beetle, if that helps. *cough*LKQ*cough*

For a similar price, you could get an Addco 1 & 1/16" (27mm) swaybar through Summit Racing:

Remember the big, shiny bar on the rear of my Datsun wagon? That's an Addco. :D

He could also drive to Addco's shop in Linville, NC (South of Boone) and likely get it A LOT cheaper than from anywhere distributors. I picked up 3 FSB's of different sizes for the C6 from them. If I paid retail it would have been over $690, but direct from them: $300. - AB

We might have a problem. Looks like the "stock" sway bar is made into the solid rear beam axle. I just picked up 10 cars and none have a regular style sway bar. Looks like aftermarket might be your only choice. Also if you got a welder or can find a welder this is another choice to do. add another bar inside the loaded rear axle.

I still don't see why you would even need a RSB on a rallycross car?

The General Lei doesn't have one and it has more oversteer than we need. Of course it's no VW, and we are very happy about that.

Well if that's where the stock bar is supposed to be, then I don't know whether or not I don't have one. Guess I'll put it on jCk stands and jack one wheel to see how much coupling there is. Between wheels.
To Vincent, our Sentra had rear bar and was easier to rotate than yours. Also, the front bar bushings were extra soft and worn so rear took more of the roll stiffness allowing better front traction.

Yeah. I've seen those. I'm not sure I want to drill holes in what is at heart the rear axle, esp. when it's not really reversable. I much prefer the bars that bolt to the bottom of the shocks. (like this)

OK, so I missed looking inside the axle for the sway bar, but lo and behold, there is a wimpy little bar inside. The effect of this small bar will be debatable, but we'll try a couple of events before shelling out for an aftermarket bolt on. With the car on jack stands we can jack up one wheel until the car starts to come off the jack stands and the opposite wheel just hangs. We had expected to see some slight rise from the unloaded wheel, but nothing is observable. With other cars I have experience with both wheels want to go up together if there is a reasonably sized anti-sway bar.

So much to learn, so little time (left before the first event).

Yeah, that "pipe" really doesn't do much. The fact that it cannot overcome the stock springs is enough said. Golfs are famous for cocking a wheel around corners...
