I'm planning on installing a single DIN radio and some gauges in the center stack of the mustang. I'm in need of an iPod cable for my nano if anyone has a spare for sale. Let me know please, I wanted to make my crutchfield order today and I don't want to have to buy their ipod cable if I don't have to.

I have a firewire ipod cable I don't need if you want to trade...

We buy lots of these at work, and we buy the cheapest ones available. I have found they have about a 1/10 failure rate, but you can't beat the $0.80 price (including shipping).

Sorry, I don't have an extra, but would suggest monoprice.com for good prices and various lengths - I've bought a shorter one for the car.

Which head unit are you getting? Be sure to post pics when you get the radio and gauges in. :)

Here's what I'm going after looks wise. This is part of a thread from the bullitt forums...

http://www.imboc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205891

waiting on a temp gauge and oil sending unit to come in from VDO as I'm using the old gauges from the 328. Going to order the Pioneer DEH-P7400HD head unit from Crutchfield as it does everything I need it to do and has the back mounted USB plug for the iPod along w/ integrated iPod controls.

FYI Rodney, I put two of my gauges in with vent pods and installed a full DIN headunit in my Mustang. FYI, the vent pods allow use of the gauges while still retaining use of the vents.

Also if you need any help, I've been there, done that obviously so I can provide some needed info or help. Just let me know.

Yeah, that was a nice setup on the car VK. So where did you run the wiring thru the firewall? What color coded wire do I use for the gauge lights? Do you have any kind of wiring diagram link you could share?

IIRC, there is a large grommet beside the steering column making firewall access easy.

I installed the gauges along with the new H/U so I just tapped into the aftermarket wiring harness for power, ignition, illumination, etc.

Which gauges are you getting? IMO, Autometer is one of, if not the best. I wanted full sweep gauges so my electric water temp was a little pricey, but the oil pressure gauge is mechanical.

Ford made the 4.6L easy peasy to add oil pressure and water temp gauges with virtually no modifications. I have pics of that install too if you need them...see the next post below.

More info from my install for you Rodney:

I removed the LF splash shield and routed the braided line and wires through the stock rubber grommet. Ford leaves plenty of room which made it easy.

For the oil pressure connection, I removed the stock oil pressure switch and replaced it with an 1/4" NPT to -4AN adapter. The stock oil pressure switch acts like a dummy light so rather than use a tee to keep it I left it out. I simply connected it to ground to avoid the "low pressure warning" display on the message center.

Image

For the water temperature sender I removed the stock 3/8" NPT plug from the block and used the supplied Autometer bushing to install the new sender. I got a small golden shower, but it wasn't too bad.

Oh yeah one more thing, you see that plastic wire loom I used over the wire to the water temp sending unit? Well even though it's 3" or so from the exhaust I found it was melted after about a year. I replaced the plastic loom with a high-temp sleeve before VIR and it has worked well upon te last inspection. It's $16 for a 2 foot section (made by DEI) from O'Reileys, but it was worth it.

You just need a standard iPod USB cable? I use MonoPrice for all my cable needs (USB, Android, Apple iPod/iPhone, home theater, HDMI, etc.):

Rodney,

If you still need an ipod/iPhone docking cable I recently bought a handful of the $1 a piece variety.
I'll bring an extra one to NCAC this weekend.

Progress is being made in the center stack conversion. The stereo from Crutchfield should be here tomorrow and I can wrap up the install by the end of the week. After doing some house related stuff on Saturday, I was able to install both of the sending units on the motor. Interesting thing, I ordered a oil sending unit w/ 2 leads in the hopes the "dummy light" post would allow the stock gauge to work. No luck. The gauge dropped to zero and dash warning came on displaying "low oil pressure".

I swapped out the dash gauge lead over the the actual oil pressure lead on the sending unit and ran both the VDO and stock wires to the one post. What do you know, the stock oil pressure gauge works again. Got lucky there.

Got a little wet when I removed the block plug so I could add the water temp sending unit. Leaked at first, but I think I have dry now.

I removed the left front fender liner and had very easy access to the grommet where I could pass the wiring into the cabin of the car. Gave myself a lot of wire to play w/ on the inside of the car and ran the rest of the wiring to the sending units. All wires are inside a plastic split side flex conduit and ziptied off to other cables. The wiring looks pretty good in my opinion and is away from the exhaust.

As for gauge pod, I had purchased a used SoS radio panel from a guy on the S197 forums. It had some scratches and nicks on the panel, but that was ok as I wanted to paint it. The factory finish on the SoS was a little to glossy for me, so some 1000 grit sandpaper, some "filler" primer, flat black paint and finished off w/ some flat clear. It came out nice and almost matches the paint and texture on the center stack.

I've added a few pictures of progress so far of the radio panel....

Hopefully I'll have this in place by the end of the week. Post up more pics then.
