Hey Gary - were you driving the gutted silver Focus that said "ITA" on the side? I spent most of the last session trying to pass you :)

Mike <- Red BMW, 3000 lbs and "only" 168 HP (but it handles great)

PS - that thing ain't ITA legal, is it? Of so, I gotta get me one of those. What is it, 2500 lbs and 170 HP?

Yep, that's Gary.

Oh, and yes, my Azenis worked quite nicely in the red Virginia clay at the bottom of Hogpen. Fortunately, only my pride was damaged...

Thanks to all who braved the cold and helped to make this a great event.

I don't have any remarkable stories from the weekend. It was an uneventful one with no breakdowns, no offs and no complaints. It was my first drive at VIR and it was a good one. It is really fun to learn a new track. Julie Brunner helped me to learn quickly and find a good line.

I'll second the reaction to a ride with Jeff Curtis. He was awesome fast with great car control. I learned how much faster I could get through some of those corners with grip to spare.

Climbing esses were very fun at over a buck. I still have some work to do at Oak Tree and Hog Pen, but I still managed to get around the course in 2:28.83 on a pretty clean lap.

It was great to see everyone.

Keep the stories coming.

Since my tow vehicle is broken (state still undetermined), I scrapped the Roebling SCCA school and came to instruct at THSCC's VIR weekend. It was a good time.

I hadn't been on a race track since July of 2003 so I took it very easy in the two cars I codrove - Travis' Miata (a 92 with a MY2000 engine swap) and Jimmy's M3 (the ex-Matt Graham car). Both cars were entertaining as hell. I have to say that Jimmy's car actually has me pricing examples of similar cars...it's that good on a racetrack.

The biggest thing for me this past weekend was returning to instructing. I found that I really miss it and want to do more of it. My student and I (he was in a black E46 M3 in yellow group) really clicked. He got *so* much better in such a short amount of time. Every session he got more confident, more consistent, and faster. It was really great and quite rewarding.

One side note: the TT staff made the right call on shortening Sunday. At about 4:00 Sunday afternoon I decided to go back to Danville to retrieve something I'd left behind. About half way up 86, the road was basically useless. I counted three cars off in the ditch. I decided to cut my losses and turn around and go home. I can only imagine what it would have been like to tow a trailer in that :shudder:

A very enjoyable event. Plenty of laps, lots of space, and very courteous drivers. It really allowed me to get the hang of some additional negative camber I was able to dial in on my ITA civic (that loud white one, so several people informed me!!!). Apart from an early spin on cold tires, I was really pleased with my sessions. I tried some different lines and gear selection on certain corners, as suggested by Ron Spencer in the classroom session, and it certainly felt like I was getting quicker…….anyone know if the TT times have been posted yet??

Many thanks to all involved!

Cheers, Mark W

I like to post a public "thank you" to the folks that put on this event. I had a _great_ time on the track and meeting fellow car nuts. I'm definitely looking forward to future track events. THSCC!

First a huge thanks to all those that helped to organize this event!

VIR Full was my first ever HPDE and I had a sneaking suspicion I might get hooked. And I am. Very very very hooked.

A great deal of thanks go out to Tim Schur (sorry if i hacked that spelling) for being a spectacular instructor who really helped ease my nerves early on saturday, and had me hitting the "race line" in 14 by sunday. :)

I definately learned a LOT this weekend. I think the biggest things was NEVER early apex. Turn 4 had my number on a few occasions and therefore so did 5, 5a, 6. :\ Nothing dramatic, just really slow. Mmmm, sweet sweet climbing esses, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Defiantely the first section of the track I managed to do "right" aka scary fast and full of adrenaline. I'm not sure who put the dip in hogpen but I'd like to thank them for reminding me that its time to get on the gas and hang on for dear life!

Big thanks again to all those that helped put this together as well as Ron and Tim for great instruction! I can't wait till my next event!
