Greetings:
I might as well start a thread on Time Trial classing and fill you in
on what is currently going on. We are trying to get the program
"re-alligned" to SCCA SOLO/Club Racing class categories as
intended from the start. The origional purpose of creating a
Time Trial series was that it would be a step up from Autocross
or a bridge series between Autocross and Club Racing. We would like
to see that purpose remain.
John King and myself are currently updating the Web site with
a Class Category overview for the Time Trial series and a handy
dandy HTML file calculator where you can click on Make and
see the Model with associated classes. Some clubs and SCCA chapters
have these posted on the internet for SOLO stock and SP classes
but most of what I found was a few years of date.
The progression should be something like this when all is done:
Street Prepaired > Street Mod > Production (National Solo) >SPO/SPU
Touring> Improved Touring or Spec Miata> World Challenge> Production (SCCA GCR) >GT> SPO/SPU
ITE will continue to be used for large displacment IT vehicles that
SCCA-GCR does not list but it will not necessarly be a dumping ground
for vehicles that are modified beyond IT specifications.
SPO/SPU will continue to be the catch-all classes for "hot rods" either
under or over 2.0L
What has mainly caused headackes is the practice of stripping out the interriorwhen building a track car. The club will let SP vehicles remove the
Rear seat or rear bulk head trim, because we require a roll bar for
Time Trials. However, you can't remove carpets and headliners, door
pannels, or consoles and run in SP. Street Mod is allows a liberal
set of motor mods and swaps that should be popular, but its still a class
intended for street vehicles. Stripped out interriors are not allowed in
SM either, except rear seat/trim removal to fit in a roll bar or cage.
The PRODUCTION class defined in the National SOLO rules allows
complete stripping of trim as well as glass and exterior trim (bumpers
etc). This is very wide open and creative category that allows quite a bot
of freedom building a track only vehicle so long as you start out with what
was once a mass produced production vehicle. Many, if not all of
our currrent SPO vehicles could run in PROD.
Club Racing Catagory primarily exsists of the SCCA Improved
Touring and Touring Catagories. Interst in this catagory remains
high as many participants club race. However drivers of vehicles not legal
for IT may consider the solo Prepaired class before being lumped
into SPO/SPU catch-all classes.
None of the above, will fall into SPU/SPO
initially our inspections were focused on safety requriements, now
the focus will be both Safety and Classing. In order to get everyone sorted we plan to distribute a mod check list where you can tick off what has been done so we have a work sheet to use to class vehicles. NASA does this with their TT system by assigning points to
each box you tick. Right now ours would fall into Categories, if SCCA
catagories do not work for the club we can look into going to a points
system or making up our own classes.
We will be updating TimeTrials.net menu item TIME TRIAL INFO
as this progresses. For right now the Feb results will be "tentive"
but all should be sorted before the April VIR event.
