Steve,

I will not make fun of you being an old fart driving a vette ever again, it is obvious that you age has led to tremendous maturity and wisdom.

Either Vincent or Tammy (the cute reservation girl at VIR-had to be Vincent, I don't want to be mad at Tammy the cute reservation girl) messed up or reservation and we got kicked out of the Lodge for Sun night. We got a reservation in Roxboro, being cold and wet last thing I wanted to do was go to roxboro and eat Bojangles for dinner. Mark V announced they had an extra room at the Suites (paid for no less) on a first come basis. I was at the top of the paddock near the garages, so to get there fast I slammed my hatch down to drive to the barn. My "brake" tool box sitting in a postion in the trunk other than normal. Broke the window when it slammed down on it, now it is the "Broke Window" tool box.

Moral of the story children: "Haste makes waste, exactly $362.65 of waste."

Man that really sucks.... Are you going to the Alfa event? I think I *might* be ready by then...

No, my wife's dance school is having their recital, my daughter also teaches there so if I miss that I am divorced and loose one daughter!

Good choice. Similar reasons than the ones I had for not being there Saturday and Sunday.

BTW, I have decided this little family hauler is a heck of a lot of fun.

No offs and only locked the wheels up once while braking for turn 4 all weekend. I did manage to go through NASCAR sideways at about 50mph. 8) Not once, but twice. It wasn't intentional, as my driving skills are in no way on par with Randy Melton's, but I was able to implement correction and keep it on the track.

Brad Mackey ran me down in Saturday's TT. His presence on my 6 made me step up my pace resulting in my best overall finish yet. Thanks buddy-ro! :)

I think I learned a new degree of patience between the wet track conditions and run group speed due to the rain. I think a weekend in the rain(at least a day) is a good thing once in a while. It definitely helped me dial my butt-o-meter in. The result was the best I've done in the wet so far.

The bad news is I experienced my first critical mechanical failure with the rrroadster Mk I. Sunday afternoon, the crank bolt backed out, which resulted in a sheared crank key and bent crank bolt. I couldn't get the bolt out while at the track. I haven't had the time to try at the house, so I don't yet know if the crank is repairable or not. I may just get a junkyard motor this weekend and throw it in for now.

Time to start building for a 300+ HP SC'd Miata!

Hey Marty, did you bring the new Nissan out for Monday's drive?

great...just great.

LOL, just kidding Kevin and way to go on the placing. You keep getting faster and faster.

I did bring the new family truckster out and it proved to be quite fun, and even capable. I had quite a few people come over and ask what was in it.

Let's see its wed night and Brad, Stacy and I are still working on
Post Event Activities. TT Times are posted on mylaps.com.
I'll email John King and Steve Blalock the offical TT results in
the morning for publication. We had a lot of drivers registered for
the TT but many decided to pass due to the rain.

This was one of those "bad day at the track is better than good
day at work-weekends". The weather was crap. The mist
sunday kept the track wet for at least half the day. Lots of
trains in the lower run groups and lots of spins and contacts.
Just about everyone involved in off track contacts was able to
drive home-except for Eric's bent tie rod end-but we were very
fortunate not to have lost any cars. I've come to the conclusion 911's
are built like Panzer tanks. It is no wounder these cars excel in
endurance racing. I have never seen anyone put a car through an
armco wall and drive it home. If it was my Corvette it would have
been on a rollback. Wes had a big shunt at the start of Lap 1 during
the Time Trial. It's was scary but he is totally ok

Lots of lost track time pulling cars out of the mud when they got
stuck going off. Like we say in the HPDE 101 document you got to
be flexable and be prepaired to go with the flow. With one exception,
most people know this and were able to deal with it it. Not every event
can be a track weekend in paridise, unless we move the program to
Hawaii or someplace like that. But you can learn a lot in the rain
and use that to improve your skills and mental focus.

I'm looking foward to a much better weekend in May-where we
get to take off work for 2 days and play at VIR!
Brad and I, as well as Stacy, have high hopes for the May event.
It would be a good thing to move the feb event to may-if the weekday format works out for everyone. TIme will tell.
We got 60 signed up already-half way there.

See Ya On Track!

Well, let's see... After spending the better part of the last three weeks with final preparations, assignments, dealing with track officials and sweating the details, hoping that we present the best HPDE experience possible for 180+ attendees and maintaining our reputation as a class program, the staff and I finally get a couple of weeks' breather to attend to our personal life.

Time I checked in on this thread to see if we accomplished our goals, right?
Hmmmm....

Seems like there's a little frustration with us "underlings" who work the Club's HPDE program.

Just for the record, here's the list of the "Underlings" in our track program who donate their time and resources because they want to give back to the sport they enjoy:
Kevin Butler--Our #1 go-to guy who handles the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Signs, banners, helmets, setting up the classrooms, whatever needs to be done. Never complains, just gets the job done. (BTW, Kevin bumped himself DOWN to Blue Group for the VIR-North event to help balance the groups, despite being one of the faster drivers in RED!!!)
Stacy King--Director General who I know contributes 20 hours per week, EVERY WEEK, to assure we run the smoothest, most organized events around.
John King--Our tireless webmaster who keeps up with things despite running his round-the-clock business.
Marty Howard--Handling logistics for the season while taking on a full Instructor load at the track.
Brian Hobson and Brian Settle--You know, those guys who stand out in the hot pit all day to make sure you get out on track safely and who talk real slow if you are brought in after an off-track excursion? They find their track time whenever they can. And never complain if they have to run in a group below their experience level.
Ron Spencer, Karl Shultz and Chuck Hawks--Yep. Underlings. Who, by the way, are the lynchpins of our program. Their expertise in presenting informative classroom sessions and the interaction that they create among drivers helps set our program above the rest. We've all developed friendships with others in this sport which have started in the classroom. And if the air needs to be cleared, our classroom sessions provide the perfect forum.
Scott Lusted and Rob Harvey--Our Timing and Scoring team. These guys arrive Friday night before an event to set up the timing equipment, radios, and the other Blue-teeth-Ipod-microprocessor-dot-com stuff I know nothing about, other than it makes our life easier during the events.
Vincent Keene, Ryan Holton, David Spratte--All those pretty T-shirts, plaques, trophies and funky graphics appear out of the ozone, right? Well, these very talented "underlings" can't get enough thanks from me for all the stuff they accomplish on their own time to add to the overall enjoyment of a weekend on track.
All of our dedicated In-Car Instructors--Without these folks, frankly, there is no track program. Their reward is watching their students progress through the ranks and the inevitable "Thank you's" they continually receive from former students for the part they contributed in building their driving skills.
And no one knows better than I how many hours Sharon Mackey gives to the program both in document preparation at night, logistics and just pitching in at the track to keep registration, merchandise sales, sign-offs and a bunch of other stuff under control. Sharon could give a rat's ass if she ever gets in a race car again, but she enjoys the camaraderie and for better of worse, sees first-hand the hard work we all do to pull off an event that rivals those of the "For-Profit" programs.

So there you have it. A crew of dedicated folks who selflessly give their time so us track junkies can "arrive and drive" in a fun, SAFE environment. "Underlings"? Hardly.
Just ask them about the countless times folks stop them in the paddock just to say, "Hey, you guys are doing a heck of a job. Thanks for a great weekend!" That's what makes it all worth while.
How about "Overlings"? I submit that's a more appropriate title.

Edit: On second thought, we aren't " 'LINGS" at all. We're folks just trying to do the best we can. Derogatory labels notwithstanding. Enough already. :)

See ya on track

This was my first HPDE with Tarheel, and my only previous event was with Mazda drivers last fall. Mazda drivers put on a great, well run, fun event. Although I had heard great things about the THSCC program I honestly didn't think you guys could do much better. Well I was wrong. You guys managed to turn everything up to 11. I don't say that to critisize the mazda program, but rather show how impressed I was with tarheels. Despite the rain (which made my car handle like the back tires were on ice saturday) I had a lot of fun. The class room was much better, the event was run on time, the instructors were great, and everyone was helpful.

I'll be back.

Brad, Mark, and the rest of the crew please give yourself a pat on the back.

I agree 100%. I've only been doing track events since 1981 mainly with the BMWCCA at Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Lime Rock, Summit Point and in recent years VIR but also throw in PCA and the Walter Mitty Challenge years ago... The THSCC events I have been to in the past 3-4 years are run as well as or better than the best I've experienced.

I had a unique perspective this weekend by being pit crew/sounding board to my son and daughter who were each doing their second event at VIR. They got everything they needed this weekend -- great instruction in the classroom, great instruction in-car coupled with excellent progress (signed-off for last sessions on Sunday) while being conservative and safe on track. From everything I could see, this event was run as well as it could be. Good job guys.

On another note, it is really sad to see what VIR has done with their skidpad (concrete barriers). This looks like an emotionally driven decision that hopefully has a longer term plan behind it. I've spent a lot of time on the BMW Performance Center skidpad, and it would be REALLY nice to see a professional skidpad created at VIR as opposed to the parking lot with barriers setup (coupled with significant camber). That said, the short time Andy and Jackie got on the pad was very helpful to them. I was instructing them, and continually saying and pointing where they need to keep their vision was a GREAT learning experience for them. As soon as that tail comes out, the eyes control whether or not you will learn from that point onward. The more car control skills we can teach will help everyone in the club at one point or another in their future. VIR should look at what Summit Point and BeaveRun have done in this regard. BeaveRun's informal autocross practice series looks wonderful for example.

Glad you had a good time Chuck, glad your kids did too!

FWIW, those barriers are there for a pretty good reason. Chuck Hawks was telling us they are there in response to a bit of an incident the police training guys had where they had a car go off out of control and get uncomfortably close to the T4 corner worker station positioned just downhill from the skid pad. We probably still had room to shift the circle closer to the non-barrier sides, but just didn't have time to adjust it any further.

Yeah, I had heard about that. Hopefully it is a short-term measure with a longer term plan behind it though (as in building a real skid pad perhaps in a different location). Perhaps locating those barriers further off the pavement and adding deformable crush material in front of them would be better short term solution while the new skid pad is in planning stages. :)

As always, kudos to the track crew for putting on another great event. I had been lucky over the past couple of years by never having a track weekend in the rain. Well, this event took care of that very quickly. Quite often on Saturday, I felt like I was back in Chicago driving in the winter snow and ice. Thanks goodness it dried up Sunday afternoon and Monday.

I appreciate the patience from anyone in Blue Group that may (scratch that - was) faster than me in the rain (and dry). In addition to a good lesson in car control, smoothness and a reminder in pedal modulation, this event was a great reminder in attention to my mirrors and pointing people by so I didn't hold them up.

I do not look forward to another wet event, but I am at least happy that I made it through my first one without leaving the pavement. With one Mustang already at home with a blown engine, I didn't want to take our convertible home on a wrecker. LOL, here's the best thought of the weekend... before Saturday, I could count on not much more than one hand how many times our convertible had been in the rain since new!
