Fix the car Cline....I know if you don't, you're going to get one of those "geezer-mobile" Corvettes, and I certainly won't be able to keep up with you in one of those.

easy now Jason, we are stepping into a whole different area here now.

besides everyone knows Miata'a are faster than Corvettes. haven't you ever heard that in the classroom? especially when driven by a gold chain wearing geezer.

Miatas are certainly faster than the garage queen corvettes that don't get out on track and just get waxed monthly. :P

Taking my thread back!

Just got must updated estimate. 8k for known body work 5k for two new seats!! I has already done the math and if I could do the body work for 5k I would get them to total it, buy the salvage, put race seats and keep it. Doesn't make any sense to do it at this price. I'll be shopping next week.

And, no not for a corvette. Reasons stated on Lounge forum (which is an appropriate place for you gold chain wearing lounge lizards that drive vettes.)

Hey Cline, does your insurance agent know you race your car? You better be careful or you could lose your coverage :)

Do not race, repeat after me HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING EXPERIENCE or DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE.

Yeah amazing isn't it. INsurance adjusters I know all talk about how the unibodies (can't spell monequock) chassis are the best safety feature ther is on modern cars.

5K for 2 seats in a Mini. I've driven a Mini recently (there I admitted it!). The seats are nice, but $5K. That's a joke... You could put custom seats in it built to your specs in fine Italian leather for less than that.

So you're up to $13K. What is the current value of your Mini before it got punted? 50% over it's value doesn't seem to work for getting them totaled these days. You need to be closer to 75%. Are there any other ridiculously valued parts in that car you can add that are broken?

If they total it and you can get the unibody straightened out to be true and capable of being aligned. You have the makings of a dedicated track car you already know how to drive. And you can put race seats in it and a cage for less than BMW charges for Mini seats...

If Cline was the welding/fabricating kind of guy, I'd suggest buying the car back, straightening it out, and making the track beast out of it. If you can do the majority of that work yourself, it's a do-able. If you're not doing most of the work yourself, I would recommend starting over with a straight car.

I'd be afraid that after the initial unibody/chassis work was done, the time and pain of tracking down all the gremlins would mean a bunch of trips back and forth to the shop that did the initial work.

I vote for a new (to you) car.

I already have bmw motorcycle in my garage that I am rebuilding. (Feb incounter with a large dog and stupid insurance agent has cancelled collision and comp to save money) My very understanding wife who supports all my hobbies has already chimed in on this one with a resounding no!

As for Grahams question 16 -17k is probably the value so you through in over a month of rental & diminished value and were over 75%.

If I bought it back I would have 12k in it before I could start racifying it. It would have a retail value of about 10k so I think I'll go with another one.

I might have missed something.

Why would you have $12K into before you can racifying it? You're at $13K with an insurance company approved body shop with new OEM seats.

You wouldn't be buying OEM seats to just replace them with your racing seats? So now we're at $8K.

I bet, if you went with used parts and discount paint job you could ring the bell for your $5K. It's not a garage queen. It's a track toy with a salvage title.

I am guessing 16-17 settlement. 4k for the salvage. I am not sure about availability of used parts. NOne at the normal places. I could get some of the trim pieces, seats etc. but the two qtr panels are only 238, deck lid isn't much-anyway the 8k for the body work does not account for any hidden damage and it not running (probably nothing more than a sensor that cuts the engine in the case of hard impact). I am still thinking about the discount bodywork like you said which is why I am up at 1:17 am on the stupid internet. I am even thinking about how I could do with buying the salvage and parting it out. Problem is where to store it, my wife is not giving up her side of the garage and I am one car on blocks in the back yard from my neighbors shipping me to WV
