Trying to figure out plans for 2007 and beyond. I would love to have a T2 or CMC Camaro, but a number of people have tried to steer me away from that. Their thoughts are SM is the place to get started in wheel-to-wheel racing.

What are the thoughts of those who have or run in Spec Miata?

Daddy like. Lots of SM's to be had relatively cheap out there to get started with. Find something someone *started* but never finished for the best deal on a car that's relatively unmolested, but make sure the cage will allow for seat mounting like you'll need it. If you aren't sure about something, see if Chris Schimmell will look at it with you.

I *may* have a newly caged chassis for sale soon that would need the build finished on it.

Tarheel member Thomas Lackey has a perfect starter SM for sale.

Schimmel Cage, all the suspension, etc.

Stock motor and viscous LSD, needs paint (I think)

I want to say he was asking $9k.

About to come full circle Jim?

I love running in the class (if I don't pay attention to who's protesting whom in my region). There are plenty of entrants, and always someone to race with.

When they had both SM and SSM on the track at the same time, we all hit each other more, but this year they split us up (still around 25 entrants per race) and we seem to be hitting each other less. (And poor ITA and the classes they're out there with are having a heck of a time since they have the biggest run group now.)

It's up and coming. There's the option to run both SM and ITA in one weekend, so lots of seat time if you want it. (Does the SE do SSM? I like that one since even less mods are allowed.)

Getting into the class and having fun can be done *relatively* cheaply. I spend maybe $600 a weekend if I don't hit anything hard and if no major parts let go.

If you want to compete for podium, $$$ will need to be spent on a motor (yes, I know it's a spec class), development, set-up, etc. Racing is never *cheap*. SM it's only less-expensive than some other classes.

Don't race a car that you have an emotional attachment to... you will get hit, so don't set yourself up for additional disappointment. (Reason #1 I never would have made my black R pkg a race car.)

Check out the www.SpecMiata.com forums. Good place to keep up with the latest happenings in the class.

Register for the Mazda Comp program.

Not quite :D I do enjoy the track, but need the competition fix.

It is interesting looking at the different options. SARRC does not have SSM, although MARRC does. That looks to be a nice place to start. All the different regions and rules make AX classing look elementary.

Doing anything more to the Camaro is out of the question. It is jsut to rare to risk any thing more than TT. Plus the only options are AS, CMC or AI. Way too much money to get started.

Since it will be a dedicated race car anyway, what about Spec Racer Ford? How does it compare on repair costs, etc? Since the engines, etc. are sealed won't it be less of a "who is cheating by how much" problem? Are the latest spec tires working out well? I assume it is at least as safe as SM and at least as repairable? I haven't checked the records but won't it be faster too?

I assume there are prep shops for both SM and SRF how about renting for a weekend?

I meant getting back into a Miata. :) I remember your first auto-x years.

Dick has a point... check out SRF too. Try to rent a SM for a weekend and see if you like it. (Bet you can get one to rent at an HPDE.) Probably the same for SRFs.

Is CMC that much more than SM? What are the drawbacks to that series you are hearing? Just curious?

My guesses: Compared to Spec Miata -

Further from stock = more preparation needed
Heavier with more power, less brake and handling = much higher tire, brake, and gas expense
"old tech" V-8's further from stock = shorter engine life but higher prep expense

Dick (Mustang guy . . . for daily use, not track)

Actually it is pretty close to SM maybe even less expensive. But it is not widely popular in the east yet. Only NASA recognizes it. Mostly they fill in for the Iron series....that is what I have heard. The rules are different so the car is not competitve in SCCA American Sedan.

There were only 700 1LE's built in 1992. Hell, there were less than 1100 3rd 1LE built...I do not want to mess it up that way.

I really loved FV as simple and inexpensive. That said, if I was to go back to racing, I'd be really tempted by IT7. Can't beat a rotary for longevity on the track.

:brow: I guess you have had or heard of guys with much better luck then myself or my dad. We went through 3 rebuilds in 2 seasons, Just kept breaking apex seals even though we were using the upgraded carbon race apex seals. That was only spinning 8k in a 12A motor. Maybe it was just our bad luck. Good luck with the decision Jim, SM seems to be quite popular and there is never a lack of competition.
