Street Touring (street tire) classes in Time Trials?

If you participate (or plan to participate in the near future) in THSCC's Time Trials series, please vote via this poll your level of interest in including the SCCA Street Touring classes (STS, STX, STU, STS2) in Time Trials.

For those who don't know much about SCCA's Street Touring classes, they have been introduced by the SCCA as Solo classes over the past few years and allow similar mods to Street Prepared but require use of street tires (any tire w/treadwear rating of 140 or higher). The most popular tire choices include (but are in no way limited to) Falken Azenis RT-215 & RT-615, Hankook RS-2, Kumho MX, Yokohama Advan Neova, Falken FK-451, etc. If interested, you can check the complete list of Rules (see below), as the list of allowed mods is similar to, but not exactly the same as, Street Prepared (for example, tire widths are restricted in Street Touring; big brake kits are allowed in STX & STU, not in Street Prepared, STS, or STS2).

The complete list of Street Touring class rules is located in Section 14 of the SCCA Solo Rulebook, which can be downloaded for free at http://www.scca.org/Solo/ , click on the 'Cars and Rules' tab. Further down the same webpage are download-able lists of excluded cars, examples of eligible cars by class, etc.

The following are the basic car requirements for each of the Street Touring classes:

STS
- Coupes/Sedans - 4 seats minimum (except sports car-based)
- Engine size (maximum): 3.1L normally aspirated or small turbo/supercharged engines specifically listed
- No Limited Slip Differentials except standard viscous-types
- STS Rules are in Section 14.0 thru 14.10 of the SCCA Solo Rulebook.

STX
- Coupes/Sedans - 4 seats minimum (except sports car-based)
- Engine size (maximum): 5.1L normally aspirated or 2.0L forced induction (single turbo/supercharger)
- STX Rules include all STS Rules plus STX allowances/restrictions listed in Section 14.11 of the SCCA Solo Rulebook

STU
- Coupes/Sedans - 4 seats minimum (except sports car-based)
- Engine size (maximum): unlimited normally aspirated or 3.1L forced induction (single turbo/supercharger)
- STU Rules include all STS & STX Rules plus STU allowances/restrictions listed in the 'Street Touring Supplemental Classes' Quick Reference Sheet, which can be downloaded for free at http://www.scca.org/Solo/ (click on the 'Cars and Rules' tab).

STS2
- Sports Cars w/ 2 seats
- Engine size (maximum): 1.9L normally aspirated (no forced induction)
- No Limited Slip Differentials except standard viscous-types
- STS2 Rules are the same as STS Rules, except for number of seats and engine displacement limits

I've been considering asking Mark this very question. I don't know that we'd go so far as to use the exact class specifications, but I know I for one will eventually have a roll bar and harnesses, and want to do the time trials, but I may not be willing to invest in a second set of wheels and tires, and/or a tow vehicle or pull-behind just to be competitive.

I think its a great idea, thanks for bringing this up

Looks like Ryan is correct - according to last month's VIR-N event results, Vincent Keene ran in SM and Marty Howard ran in SM2.

BTW, to avoid confusion, the Street Mod classes are not street tire-based.

Hopefully, street tire-based classes (Street Touring) might attract more participants - the ability to drive to/from the track on the same tires you run in the Time Trials and be competitive in class, as well as improved grip in wet conditions, are probably the most significant selling points.

itll probably be a year before my first time trial, but id be GREAT to know i could run in a street tire class.

First, thank you to those folks responding to this thread.

An update - Mark V has agreed to adding Street Touring to our Time Trials series :thumbsup:

. Anyone interested in moving to an ST class mid-season should contact Mark directly.

I've added STS STS2 STX and STU to the list of supported classes.
These will be the street tire classes with a tread rating of at least 140.
