I briefly used a G2X GPS datalogger at VIR South with the Alfa club, here's a link to a page with some of the info. Not sure what your figure is for affordable, but for what you can do with this system, its a pretty good one I think

It comes with a display which can be used in the car. you have to trigger the start/finish line once so it will update the lap time in real time. Using the software, you can set up your own segement times after downloading the data.

I can probably get the same unit in November for you to try out if you'd like.
