Maybe this should go in the tech forum too, but any way here is my question.

Yesterday I switched to falken azenie's, not the newest version but the previous what ever number that is. The left front was extremely chunked/melted into globs on the inside, the right front to a lesser extent. I was running about 34psi, per my instructors suggestion.

Is this indicative of anything more than inexperienced driving? My instructor seemed to be happy with my progress and only mentioned that I needed to work on my smoothness in braking.

Any chance this was tire worms? A pic would help us tell.

Inside edge wear is usually an indication of excessive corner exit wheel spin. As the left handers on VIR are slower corners, that would allow for more wheelspin and would, perhaps, explain the wear differential.

Cline, first hope you had a great time! I recall seeing you on track at least once and you seemed to be doing well!

On the tire wear issue, when is the last time you had the alignment checked? Lots of inside wear can mean too much negative camber or perhaps excessive toe (not sure if toe in or out).

I'd say if you can get 2 degrees negative in front and 1/32 total toe out (perhaps a bit more for autocrossing) that would be a good place to start. But of course if you can find a Mini expert, tell them what you want to set it up for and go with what they say.

If you can find out how get 2 degrees of camber in a stock Mini, call Chiles and Carpenter.

I am begining to think I just have tire worms. I can pull a lot of them off it is just really weird how the are located mostly in one area. How do put pics on this?

I found that pulling them off is too big of a pain. I just drive down the raod until the tires get up to temp and zig-zag a few times. That usually gets rid of most of them for me.

BTW, you can't just post a pic directly to this forum. You have to have it hosted somewhere off-site and post a link to it here.

If you can just pull them off then yes, as Diane said they are tire worms. Hard to believe a blond could be right!!

To get rid of them just drive it a while and scrup them back and forth.

When you say mostly in one area if you mean around the inside edge I'd expect that with negative camber.

Here ya go Cline. Definitely worms -- pick up rubber from the race track. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks, I don't know about how well I was doing, but I think I learned a lot from my instructor and also riding with Bill Gratton. One thing great about this club is how much everyone is willing to help out.

Thanks for all the help diagnosing my case of worms!
